Applications roll in as filing deadline passes

Published: Friday, December 23, 2011 3:01 PM CST
The initial filing period for spots in the spring primaries came to an end Monday even as court decisions have held up the implementation of new district maps for several races.

The slow approval process of the legislature-drawn maps, which are the subject of a lawsuit filed against the state by several civil rights groups, led the primary to be pushed back from March 6 to April 3. The maps were not initially approved after a D.C. court found the state "used an improper standard or methodology to determine which districts afford minority voters the ability to elect their preferred candidates of choice."

The future of the state's maps, as well as those maps drawn by a San Antonio court, is expected to be decided in January, when the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Supreme Court will each hold hearings on issues related to the case. The maps require government approval due to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which aimed to prevent voter discrimination in states with a history of the practice.

When the period ended, only one Democrat was on the ballot in Collin County, but that could change when the filing period is reopened after the courts make their decisions on which maps will be officially adopted. Shawn Stevens, chairman of the Collin County Democratic Party, said he expects to see additional Democrats file in the later period, once the district lines are officially drawn. The dates of the additional filing period, in which candidates will be able to enter, drop out of or change the seat they are seeking, have not been set but are expected to be in late January and early February.

The current list of candidates for all Collin County offices, as well as state House District 88 which includes portions of Plano and Frisco that lie within Denton County, is as follows:
