Collin County Utility Player of the Year: Sam Morrell, Plano
By Matt Welch, mwelch@acnpapers.com
Plano Senior senior Sam Morell was quite the valuable commodity for the Plano Senior football team this season.
Not just valuable in that he was the leading vote-getter among his peers for team captain, but that Morell had a versatility the Wildcats embraced wholeheartedly.
"Sam was one of the kids who, if we felt like we wanted to be competitive, we had to get him involved in all three phases," said Jaydon McCullough, Plano head coach. "You've got to be a special kid to be able to do that."
But perhaps the senior's most valued contribution came in the wake of junior quarterback Richard Lagow sustaining an ankle injury Oct. 28 against Plano East.
"The next day, [Morell] left me a voicemail," McCullough said. "He said, 'I heard about the unfortunate situation with Richard. I just want you to know that if you need me to play quarterback, that I'm the man for the job.'
"To me, that explains what kind of person Sam is."
It was just another example of Morell's resourcefulness; a notion put in perspective when he was named to the first team on both offense and defense for District 8-5A.
