Plano police seeking suspects in recent string of shootings

Map courtesy of Google -- Plano police are investigating five shooting incidents that have occurred within three weeks of one another. No one was injured during the first incident (A), which occurred on Nov. 28 and involved gunfire on Blackjack Oak Lane. Police did find bullet holes in several houses on the street. Two other cases of gunfire with no injuries or property damage were reported: Dec. 3 on Frontier Lane (B), and Dec. 14 on Middle Cove Drive (C). Two shootings have occurred which resulted in injury or deaths. On Dec. 14, one person was killed and two others were injured in the 1100 block of F Avenue (D). On Dec. 18 two people were injured in a shooting near Clark Stadium (E).

Investigators from the Plano Police Department are seeking the identity of the suspect responsible for a double shooting that took place near Clark Stadium early Sunday morning, marking the fifth shooting incident that has occurred in the city within the past three weeks.

Police were called to the 400 block of W. Spring Creek Parkway at approximately 2 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire in the area, where witnesses gave descriptions of vehicles seen in the area. The descriptions led police to one of the vehicles in the 6000 block of Alma Drive, where the two were found suffering non-life threatening injuries, said Officer David Tilley of the Plano Police Department.

The victims -- a 19-year-old male from Allen and a 16-year-old female from Plano -- were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

"We're not releasing their names because we haven't determined what the motive yet is," said Tilley. "We still have some suspects at large and we don't know if they know who [the victims are]. This is really for [their] safety. We are looking into some possible leads but there's nothing concrete right now."

According to Tilley, the male was standing outside of the vehicle near the intersection of W. Spring Creek Parkway and Stadium Drive and was shot in the waist area. The female was sitting inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting and was hit by a bullet that went through her car seat and into her shoulder.

Thanks to witness accounts, investigators were given clear vehicle descriptions that hopefully will lead police to their suspect, Tilley said.

"We don't know what took place, we are still trying to figure that out," said Tilley. "From what I've been told, the shooter started shooting rounds as the vehicle [and the victims] fled the scene and went to a nearby residence. Then they left that residence and that's when an officer stopped them."

Sunday's incident is the fifth gunfire occurrence in Plano within the past month and the second which resulted in injury or death. Police are still investigating a triple shooting incident that took place on F Avenue on Dec. 14 that left one individual dead.

"This is not characteristic at all compared to what we've been exposed to in the past," said Tilley of the recent string of shootings. "It's one of those things that we really don't run into on a regular basis. At this point you have to look at it as happenstance. We are working on some pretty good leads on the homicide and on the most recent shooting; those two are the major ones because they actually involve injury and death of an individual. I feel pretty positive that we are going to be able to solve these soon."

The first shooting incident occurred in the 3900 block of Blackjack Oak Lane in east Plano on Nov. 28. Officers responded to the east Plano neighborhood at 8:30 p.m., where residents said they heard gunfire in the area but were unable to give detailed descriptions of the suspect or whether or not a vehicle was involved due to darkness. The shooting left bullet holes in several residences.

Police also responded to reports of gunfire in 6000 block of Frontier Lane on Dec. 3 and in the 1100 block of Middle Cove Drive on Dec. 14, neither of which resulted in injury or property damage.

While the Middle Cove and Frontier incidents appear to be related, Tilley said he did not believe there were any ties between them and Sunday's shooting, despite their close proximity to one another.

"I think that incident is isolated and I think the homicide that took place on F Avenue is isolated," said Tilley. "With the Blackjack Oak [incident], we don't know if this is related to any of these. We are still working to link together the Frontier and Middlecove incidents. Whether they're just popping rounds off into the air or what, we don't know."
