Deputy to run for Fannin County sheriff

A longtime Collin County deputy sheriff has announced plans to run for the office of Fannin County sheriff.
Richard "Dickie" Fields, who has been a Collin County deputy for the past 18 years, is so far one of three Republican candidates vying for the position.
Fields, who lives in Bug Tussle in Fannin County, said he wanted to be in law enforcement since he was six years old.
"I came from an abusive, alcoholic home," Fields said. "When the police came to deal with my father, they always allowed him to keep whatever respect he had left. They inspired me to want to go into law enforcement. Law officers have always been my heroes."
Fields is a native of Lubbock and attended Texas Tech University. He was in construction management for a while, before joining the Collin County Sheriff's Office as a deputy in 1994.
He said working under the leadership of Collin County Sheriff Terry Box and with one of the best organized sheriff's departments anywhere has helped him prepare for the role of Fannin County sheriff.
"Collin County has the best-managed sheriff's department anywhere," Fields said. He added that he admires Box for the outstanding leadership he has provided for the sheriff's office over the years.
Box said he didn't get involved in endorsing candidates for office.
"However," he said, "(Fields) has been a good employee here in Collin County, and I think the world of him. He has been a loyal, steadfast employee, and his work record is excellent."
Fields said he wants to be Fannin County sheriff in order to use his experience as a crime-fighter to benefit the entire county, and also for the sakes of his two grandchildren.
He and his wife, Becky Royall Fields, have been married for 37 years. They have two sons, Jeremy and Micah, both of whom live in Fannin County.
Fields will be seeking the Republican nomination for Fannin County sheriff along with two other candidates. Donnie Foster, who was appointed sheriff by the Fannin County Commissioner's Court after Sheriff Kenneth Moore retired last January, has announced plans to run, as has Honey Grove Police Chief Mark Johnson.
No Democratic candidates have announced intentions to run.
