Ramage seeks judge nomination

Published: Monday, January 9, 2012 10:33 AM CST
Three candidates are seeking the Republican nomination for Collin County Court at Law No. 2, but Sharon Ramage said she is the only one with the necessary experience to fill the seat. The seat was vacated when Judge Jerry Lewis stepped down last year and the winner will serve the remainder of Lewis' term, which expires in 2014.

The Frisco-based attorney has been a Collin County resident since 1999 and has been a lawyer for nearly 20 years since earning her degree from Baylor University. She also has experience running for public office, having unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the County Court at Law No. 2 seat in 2010.

"Out of all of my opponents, I think I have the most experience in taking cases to trial as well as the most varied experience as a lawyer," she said. "I think the bench needs judges that have experience in a broad base of the law. I think it makes you better-rounded as an attorney and as a judge."

During her time as an attorney, Ramage worked for the Tarrant County District Attorney, where she prosecuted a variety of cases including crimes against children including homicides and sex crimes. Ramage estimates she prosecuted more than 1,000 cases during her stint in Tarrant County, and says she has taken more than 100 trials to a jury.

After five years as a prosecutor, she entered private practice where she has worked with criminal and civil cases. Ramage currently runs her own law firm in Frisco which specializes in family law including child custody, divorces, child support cases and adoption cases. Ramage is also the co-author of the book "All About Texas Law and Kids," which she says provides answers to legal questions regarding children and child custody. While specializing in family law, Ramage's firm also handles criminal appeals.

One of the things Ramage said she is most proud of is her work as a hearing officer for special education students, a position she has held since 2003. In her position as hearing officer, Ramage hears the cases of parents who have complaints against their children's schools. She said during the cases, she makes rulings the same way a judge would, which gives her needed experience if she is elected to the Collin County bench.

Ramage and her husband Todd reside in Frisco with their two daughters, 10-year-old twins who were adopted from China. Ramage said she is a lifelong Republican and has served as a delegate to the State Republican Convention, while also serving as a member to the Golden Corridor Republican Women's Club, the Frisco Area Republican Women, the Collin County Conservative Republicans and the Collin County Lincoln Society.
