PLANO -- Plano West's girls basketball team grabbed control of the District 8-5A standings Tuesday night as the Lady Wolves held off Marcus, 47-36.
With the win, the Lady Wolves improve to 10-0 while second-place Marcus drops to 7-3. West also holds the tiebreaker over the Lady Marauders after claiming the first matchup Dec. 20, 56-40.
"It was a defensive battle," said Don Patterson, West coach. "Marcus does a good job and coach (Fred) Jones has them playing some really good defense. Thank goodness we matched them tonight. Especially in the end of the third and the fourth quarter. That's when I thought we started playing much better on defense."
West led, 10-3, after the first quarter before both squads settled in.
"Every girl that West puts on the court is a triple-threat and it's tough to matchup with," said Fred Jones, Marcus coach. "They're a great team that applies a lot of ball pressure. For our guards, it was a great lesson on how to get ready for that kind of pressure. They came out with a lot of intensity, and we knew they would at home. Early, that first quarter, I think we got in a hole. The second two quarters we won, but we couldn't dig ourselves out of it."
Sierra Bone paced Marcus with 12 points, while Vannesa Jones had seven and Ashley James and Taylor Roof posted six apiece.
Patterson, meanwhile, was pleased with what he saw considering the Lady Wolves weren't as prolific from the perimeter as they can be.
"We missed a lot of shots we usually hit," he said. "We're a 3-point shooting team and we couldn't buy one in the first half and we started rushing things. They make you do that and I told our team 'We have to be able to slow down a little bit, run the offense and get good shots and go from there.' We have to make them work on defense too and we did that.
"But I thought our defense won the game for us tonight. It got us going with some traps and steals and we were able to increase the tempo and also got some fouls out of it."
While Marcus came up short, Jones believes the game will benefit them in the future.
"We competed well in a hostile environment," he said. "That's the biggest thing we're taking from it: to prepare us for what we'll see down the road because of our youth and inexperience. More than anything else in the X's and O's, we have to get tougher and tonight [West] was just tougher than we were."
The Lady Marauders continue at 6 p.m. Friday against Plano Senior, while West looks to remain perfect in district when it hosts Allen.
"I thought Randi played really well on defense and on the boards," Patterson said. "I really thought everyone played pretty well. The ones that came off the bench for us did a good job of keeping our defense going when our offense was stagnant. Our depth and the way we play team-ball is what has gotten us to where we are."
