Plano drivers paying more at the pump than other Texans

Published: Saturday, February 11, 2012 12:50 PM CST
On average, Texas drivers may pay less for gasoline than their counterparts in other states. However, recent price increases in Plano have left local drivers paying considerably more than other Texans.

The state-wide average gas price is $3.39 for regular unleaded, AAA announced on Thursday. The price rose one-cent in the past week, and is 43 cents higher than it was at this time last year. The national average is $3.49.

The same day AAA announced the state-wide average, many gas stations in Plano raised their prices. Stores in southeast Plano were selling gas at prices at or above the national average, with some stations setting the price for regular unleaded as high as $3.55 a gallon. The price increase means on average, a typical fill up of 14 gallons will cost about $1 more, for a total of $48, said AAA's Sarah Schimmer.

Schimmer said there could be several reasons for the price increase. She said the state-wide average rose 13 cents two weeks ago, so the stations may have been slow to respond and are now catching up.

“Right now the demand is so low that refineries are responding by producing less product, so there is a limited supply and prices are increasing,” she said. “However, any upward pressure on the prices as a result of the lower production has been counteracted by investor's concerns about the Euro Zone and Greek debt, which have lessened the amount the prices have risen.”

She also noted that oil futures have been less attractive due to the relative strength of the U.S. dollar, resulting in downward pressure on oil prices.

Drivers in Amarillo pay the cheapest prices for gas in the state, with an average gallon of regular unleaded costing $3.18. While many Plano drivers are currently paying more, the AAA weekly report showed that Texarkana had the highest average gas price of the 11 metropolitan areas the group monitors, with a gallon averaging $3.42.

" tulips, I agree.

The same article could also be rewritten to say Collin county residents pay more in tolls than any other county in Texas. It is just another form of robin hood as you pointed out. "
