Plano tops Lewisville for first District 8-5A victory

Published: Friday, February 17, 2012 11:33 PM CST
Something had to give in Friday's District 8-5A girls soccer contest between Lewisville and Plano Senior at Clark Stadium.

The Lady Wildcats and Lady Farmers entered as two of three teams in the district yet to record a win.

In the end, it was Plano who got off the schnide, controlling play early and blanking Lewisville, 3-0.

"It feels really good to get that first win," said Diane Davey, Plano coach. "Our kids really fought hard tonight and we had some players really step up that are starting to come into their own on the field."

Plano took command early, scoring less than three minutes in before doubling its lead three minutes later.

Sophomore Taylor Cornelius got Plano out to the solid start with the Lady Wildcats first goal. A shot from distance caromed off the right post where Cornelius corralled the loose ball and slotted the rebound to the right past Lewisville goalie Alaisha Sanders and in.

Minutes later, Plano junior Megan Flory controlled the ball on the right end line and floated a ball high to the Lewisville goal. The chip carried over Sander's head, where Plano junior Lauren Fambourgh was there to one-time it into the back of the net.

"That was a great goal," Davey said. "Megan sent it in and Lauren really came up with a big boot."

The Lady Farmers would eventually regroup but could never overcome the early deficit.

"We're very young team right now," said Erik Forrest, Lewisville coach. "It's definitely a rebuilding year for us but the kids are working hard. When you give up an early lead you want to try and respond. We didn't get there, but they fought hard."

While the Farmers never did get on the board, Forrest was pleased with how Lewisville played after digging the early hole.

"When we started the second half we played a lot more organized," he said. "We kept our shape a lot better. We just started flat and they started hot. That's hard to recover from. But we did respond and came out and kept our shape. We battled for balls and got opportunities. It looked better in the second half."

The Lady Wildcats, meanwhile, continued to attack in effort to put the game out of reach and finally did so with 11 minutes remaining when senior Alli Murphy controlled the ball on the left side and blasted one in the right corner from 25 yards out.

"I told the kids at halftime 'It's great to have a 2-0 lead, but that's the one you like and you don't like. You have to keep playing to get that third goal or they're going to stick one in and be right back in it'," Davey said. "Alli put that third one in and that was the capper for us. She and a host of other players like (junior) Kelly Chinloy, Fambourgh and (freshman) Haley McDuffee are really starting to play well."

"Alli is a great player and that was just a great shot," Forrest added. "She's going to do that sometimes."

Forrest remains pleased with the progress Sanders is making between the pipes despite surrendering three goals on Friday.

"Alysia Sanders is going to be a fantastic goalkeeper," he said. "She's never had varsity minutes prior to this year. She's a sophomore that has great ability and she just has to catch up to the speed of the game. Everything is happening faster in front of her than she's used to, but every night she's getting a little better. She has to suffer through those some times. It's a learning curve, and they same goes at some other positions. We're young all over the field, but it's OK, because they're working hard, getting better and are getting that experience."

Lewisville continues at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Marcus while the Lady Wildcats look for a second consecutive win at the same time against Plano East from Tom Kimbrough Stadium in Murphy.

"I hope we're starting to get it going," Davey said. "We're in the second part of the first round and we've learned a lot from the teams we've played against. Hopefully we can take those lessons and build from here."
