Coming Home: Former East QB joins Plano Senior staff
BY Matt Welch, mwelch@starlocalnews.com
Clint Guinn is no stranger to the Plano gridiron scene.
Therefore, it makes sense that after starting a family, he felt most comfortable in returning to coach in his old stomping grounds -- albeit with a different school than the one he grew up a part of.
"I got married, we had a little boy and decided we wanted to move back this way," Guinn said. "I was fortunate to talk to [Plano Senior football head coach Jaydon McCullough] and he had a spot open at Vines High School, so I jumped all over that so we could get back close to family and to really be a part of the Plano program."
Guinn will don the maroon and white after rising through the Plano ISD ranks decorated in black and gold as the quarterback for Plano East during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
"I'm just glad to be a part of Plano ISD, period," Guinn said. "Plano Senior High has won seven state championships, so just to be a part of that tradition is pretty awesome."
It's tradition unlike any stop Guinn has enjoyed, making the latest trek in a coaching career that has run all throughout the state. Initially serving as the quarterbacks and linebackers coach for two years at Anna, Guinn then set up shop for one year as the linebackers coach at Carthage before a connection with former Wildcats coach Doug Wendel led to a three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Eustace.
From there, Guinn undertook the task of head coach for the Vines freshman team for two seasons and now, after spending his high school years competing against the Wildcats, he eyes to make an impact as part of the staff.
"I want to instill discipline and class into my players," he said. "We're going to take pride in everything we do and we're going to do the little things right."
Specific to running backs, Guinn emphasized protecting the football and developing poise for pressure situations.
When football isn't in session, Guinn will assist the Wildcats wrestling team.
Until then, Guinn has his work cut out for him with a Plano running game that graduated a bevy of ball-carriers from 2011 in Kevin Merrill, Rakeem Crawford and L.J. Ausama. That being said, Guinn is still in the midst of evaluating the talent at his disposal to determine who can do what and who looks to set themselves apart as spring ball nears and Guinn fully endures the grind of a coaching gig he hopes to carve out a niche in for the long haul.
"I want to make it my home," he said. "I want my kids to be raised in Plano ISD and that's why I'm here. I love the area, I love the district and this is where I want to raise my family."
