Softball: Jacobs excels despite heavy workload
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
Behind the arm of freshman pitcher Lindsay Jacobs, and with the help of solid fielding and timely hitting, The Colony's softball team has opened District 4-5A competition with a 3-1 mark, splitting their last two contests in the midst of a busy stretch that included three games in four days.
The only loss for the Lady Cougars thus far was a 5-4 defeat Friday against Denton Ryan, while the team earned wins Wednesday against Lake Dallas, 2-1, and March 13 over Little Elm, 6-1. The Colony looked to bounce back from that loss Tuesday against Wichita Falls Rider (results not available as of press time) weather permitting.
"We're playing pretty well," said Deana Coleman, The Colony head coach. "And I'm really proud of [Jacobs]. She threw 22 innings over a four-day stretch and I think she maybe just got worn down a little bit at the end of the Ryan game. But she is doing a great job and we're playing great defense behind her."
"We had our chances," Coleman said. "We had them with two outs in the last inning, we just couldn't put the nail in the coffin."
The winning run scored when a bloop dropped just in front of -- and even partially deflecting off of -- the glove of a Lady Cougar's outfielder.
Victoria Rendon paced the offense with a two-run double.
"Ryan has a good starter so I was pretty pleased with getting four runs," Coleman said. "We put the ball in play and got big hits. We just couldn't finish it."
The Colony's defense was on display in the win over Lake Dallas to support a solid start from Jacobs.
"Sarah Wiseman was awesome in the field," Coleman said. "She had one play where she made a back-handed catch on the run and then just planted into the fence. I thought she had knocked all her teeth out she hit the wall so hard. The glove even fell off when she hit the ground but the ball stayed right in there. Then she came up the next inning and ripped a ball into the gap."
The Colony led, 1-0, for a majority of the night before Lake Dallas tied the score in the fourth. But the Lady Cougars responded in the top of the fifth when Tori Hawk led off with a single, stole second and came around to score on an RBI from Jocelyn Ward.
"It was a good win," Coleman said. "We're still young and we're still learning. When you look at the loss against Ryan ... losing is never a good thing ... but I think it was big a wake-up call to our girls that you have to get every out and focus every pitch because we had really been on a tear until that game."
Baseball: Cougars split district contests
The Cougars baseball team had mixed results as they opened district competition as The Colony defeated Little Elm March 13 in its district opener, 6-2, before stumbling a bit Friday against Lake Dallas in a 7-2 loss. Matt Horton picked up the win on the mound for the Cougars against the Lobos.
Boys soccer: The Colony in playoff position
Each of The Colony's soccer teams are in the playoff hunt following a week off from competition for Spring Break. The Cougars (3-4) lead Richardson Pearce (2-4-2) for fourth after picking up a win March 9 over Newman Smith, 2-1. Alejandro Flores and Cesar Torres recorded goals for The Colony.
