R.L. Turner rallies past West Mesquite in boys soccer playoffs
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
West Mesquite had to be feeling good about itself going into the second half of its Class 4A Region II quarterfinal match against Carrollton R.L. Turner on Tuesday.
In a tightly-contested first, the Wranglers struck in the final seconds to score one of those unlikely goals that often times sends a team to the next round of the postseason.
But the Lions were not deflated after the late score. In fact, they came out energized in the second half, scoring a pair of goals, including the game-winner with just 3:45 left in regulation to pull out a 2-1 victory at E.H. Hanby Stadium.
West Mesquite, the 23-4A champion, finishes the year with a 20-4-5 record.
The Lions had the better part of the scoring opportunities for the first 25 minutes, but West Mesquite turned up the pressure before halftime.
After a pair of narrow misses, the Wranglers struck when Isai Velasquez sent a feed to Omar Loera, who converted the pass for a goal with just five seconds left before halftime.
R.L. Turner was undeterred by the deficit and came out firing in the second half. West Mesquite goalkeeper Jose Valadez made several strong saves to keep the Lions off the scoreboard but their consistent pressure finally paid off.
After a Wrangler penalty just outside the box, Edgar Moreno was able to drill a shot from 20 yards out to tie the game at 1-1 with 21 minutes left.
Both teams had chances from that point, with R.L. Turner getting the bulk of those.
It appeared the match was heading to overtime when the Lions were able to take advantage of a turnover. After one shot was turned away by a save, Christian Torres was there to punch in the rebound to give them a 2-1 lead with just 3:45 remaining in the game.
West Mesquite fought for the equalizer but the R.L. Turner defense was up to the task to send them on to the regional tournament.
