McKinney Boyd boys outlast North Mesquite for shootout victory

MESQUITE--Friday's Class 5A area round championship between McKinney Boyd and North Mesquite featured a little of everything.
There was plenty of offense, some spectacular defensive plays and both teams displayed dogged intensity from start to finish.
But in the end, it was the Broncos' refusal to lose that made the difference.
The Broncos (19-5-3) move on to the regional quarterfinals where they will face Jesuit on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Clark Stadium.
"It was one of the most exciting games I have ever been a part of," McKinney Boyd head coach Casey Osborn said. "North Mesquite is a very, very good team and it was a battle all night. Fortunately, we were able to come out on top."
The Broncos' playoff future looked bleak with time winding down in regulation. North Mesquite had led for much of the game and took a 3-2 advantage into the final minutes.
But when it needed it most with its season on the line, McKinney Boyd delivered, as Raul Serrano delivered a perfectly-placed crossing pass that Jordan Rubel headed into the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3 with 2:14 left.
It remained tied through the remainder of regulation, as well as two overtimes, with Stallion goalkeeper Ivanne Berumen keeping his team alive with a pair of diving saves.
The Broncos took the early advantage in the shootout with a score from Sewell Yost. Berumen and McKinney Boyd's Austin Butler each made a couple of saves before the Broncos took a 2-0 lead when Dillon Farrell converted.
Gonzalo Vidales kept the Stallions alive with a score, but Serrano's conversion sealed the McKinney Boyd win.
"The guys kept their composure and never quit fighting," Osborn said. "They kept their eyes on the prize and they were rewarded at the end."
The late drama was a fitting conclusion to an evenly-matched contest.
North Mesquite applied some early pressure and it paid off when some miscommunication on the McKinney Boyd defensive end led to an own goal and a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
Just six minutes later, the Stallions were again on the attack, with Oscar Ocampo slipping a nice back heal pass through the box to a charging Alberto Garcia, who buried the volley to make it 2-0 with 8:17 left before halftime.
That seemed to ignite the Broncos and they took less than a minute to respond, as Farrell bent a 30-yard kick into the top left corner to close to within 2-1.
McKinney Boyd kept charging to start the second half. William Wiginton, who was responsible for the own goal on the opening score, redeemed himself when he converted a volley to tie the game at 2-2 with 26:08 left in the second half.
The tie would not last long, as Juan Gonzalez gathered up a loose ball in the box and lifted it just over the goalkeeper to give the Stallions a 3-2 lead with 24:09 remaining.
It would stay that way until the final minutes, when McKinney Boyd was able to come through in the clutch and save their season.
"I hope they take away from this that you can never give up," Osborn said. "You never can tell when it is going to happen, tonight it wasn't until the last two-three minutes, but if we keep believing and battling out there, it will happen."
