Mesquite police have a suspect behind bars in a Sunday night shooting.

Police were on the way to respond to a disturbance call in the 400 block of Americana Lane at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday. While en route, the officers were advised that one of the suspects had a gun and was shooting at multiple people.

When officers arrived at the scene they discovered Idarious Benson, 23, with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was transported to Baylor Hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. A second victim, 22-year-old Rodney Anderson, left the scene prior to officers’ arrival and sought treatment at a local hospital. His injuries were also reported to be nonlife threatening.

Officers in the area of the shooting observed several people running in the alley in the 300 block of Quail Hollow. The people went through an opening in a fence and entered a residence in the 300 block of Quail Hollow. Officers observed a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle parked in the drive of the residence.

Officers attempted to get the suspects to exit the house and they refused. The officers then set up a perimeter around the residence. A police negotiator used a public address device to converse with the occupants of the house. At about 11:30 p.m., seven people emerged from the residence and were taken into custody without incident.

One of the people taken into custody was Deandre Hines, 21. Hines was identified as the suspect in the shooting and has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and remains in jail with bond set at $100,000 on each charge. Investigators recovered a handgun believed to be the weapon used in the shooting and are still working on this case to determine a motive.

Two of the people were charged with outstanding misdemeanor warrants. The other four people were interviewed and released.
