A win's a win: Panthers squeak past Lewisville, snap two-game hex

Published: Friday, April 27, 2012 11:56 PM CDT
Riding a two-game losing streak after having won 10 straight, all the Plano East baseball team wanted Friday at Lewisville was a win.

And while the 8-5A schedule isn't entirely finished for the Panthers, Friday's 3-2 win over the Farmers is a start in the team's effort to right the ship.

"There wasn't really much hitting going on," said Travis Collins, East head coach. "It was a pretty blah game for us, to tell the truth. It was just a matter of going out and playing, and scoring more runs than the other team."

The Panthers (10-4 in district) posted three unanswered runs after Cory Duran scored Lewisville's opening run on a Blake Rogers sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning. East sophomore James Rudkin landed a perfectly-placed counterpunch one half-inning later with a two-RBI triple off Farmers starter Michael Aleman that scored senior Sam Lane and junior Nick Ramos.

"(Rudkin) had three hits tonight and did a really good job," Collins said. "He seems to be one of the only ones we've got right now squaring the baseball up. But he did that last year as a freshman and he's getting hot at the right time."

Rudkin's 3-of-4, two-RBI outing accounted for half the Panthers' hits and all the runs batted in, with senior Jacob DeLaCruz capitalizing on a wild pitch in the fourth for the 3-1 edge.

Senior Brandon Johnson got the win on the mound, hurling six innings while surrendering two runs on six hits and striking out six.

"We can play a lot better," Collins said. "Our pitching has been fine and our defense has been good for the most part, but we've got to start hitting the baseball better and being more consistent with our approach at the plate."

The win was enough to knot the Panthers with Flower Mound for second place in District 8-5A.

The two squared off Saturday (results not available at press time) to determine playoff seeding, with the teams drawing either Coppell or Keller Fossil Ridge -- who tied for second in 7-5A -- in the bi-district round.
