Pilar Sanders, wife of former Dallas Cowboy Deion Sanders, spent Monday night and most of Tuesday morning in the Collin County Detention Center in McKinney following a Monday afternoon incident at their plush Prosper home.
Lt. John Norton of the Collin County Sheriff's Department said Deion's wife was booked in on assault charges Monday night and released after posting a $264 bond about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Prosper police also later charged Deion with assault, but did not take him to jail.
The arrest of his wife came after the former two-sport athlete said she had assaulted him in their home earlier Monday.
Peter Schulte, a former McKinney police officer who is now Pilar's attorney, said he believes the wrong person was originally charged in this case and that it will be proven in court. He described Deion as "a large man who used to tackle people for a living."
The woman allegedly suffered physical injuries during the dispute, while Deion said he was not injured.
"The idea that a man like Sanders could be attacked by a 120-pound woman is preposterous," Schulte said.
He also said he believed the reason Deion was not placed in jail like his wife was that "members of the Prosper Police Department are star-struck."
Rick Robertson, who has been representing Deion Sanders in the couple's divorce case, issued a statement, saying, "The unfortunate incident that occurred on Monday afternoon at the Sanders home is a criminal assault that also constitutes family violence."
The Sanders have been married since 1999 and have three children. Divorce proceedings have been under way for several months, but the couple has continued to live in the large home on a 120-acre site near Preston Road in Prosper.
A justice of the peace Tuesday signed an emergency protective order against Pilar, banning her from being within 100 yards of the home for at least 60 days.
A McKinney woman was named in the Prosper police report as a witness. She later said she will be willing to testify on Pilar's behalf.
Deion, 44, played both football and baseball at Florida State University. He was a cornerback for several teams in the National Football League and played in Super Bowl championship games with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers. He also played professional baseball for several teams, including the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants.
