People of all ages and from different walks of life joined together last Saturday to make McKinney an even cleaner city than it already was.

More than 250 people scattered to different parts of the city to pick up trash in McKinney's fourth annual Trash-Off Day, held in conjunction with the Texas Trash-Off.

Scouts, church groups, business people and residents who just wanted to help make McKinney cleaner showed up early Saturday morning at either Fire Station # 5 or at Old Settler's Park to pick up trash at specified locations. They were provided with bug spray, shirts, gloves and trash tongs.

They reconvened about 11:30 a.m. for hot dogs, cookies, cold drinks and an awards ceremony.

"We had 24 teams with over 250 volunteers who collected 73 large bags of trash and 32 bags of recycled material," said Julie Smith, manager of the McKinney Office of Environmental Stewardship. "Some odd items that were picked up included a cell phone, a street sign from the city of Allen, a lawn chair, a boomerang and several tires."

She also said one of the items collected was a "No Dumping" sign.

A group called It's T-Time (resident Alonzo Tutson's team) collected the most trash. The city's Municipal Court Team collected the most recycled materials, and Fellowship of Debris, composed of Allan and Melanie Brace and Steve and Laura Tittle, collected the most unusual item, the street sign from Allen.

Greg France of Saint Gabriel's Catholic Church was honored for having the most volunteers.

Several Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts also participated and were presented patches for their efforts.

Scouts, siblings and parents of Cub Scout Pack 531 worked for two hours and gathered nine bags of trash, six bags of recyclable items, yards of mangled erosion fence and retention paper, fence posts, a car battery, PVC pipe, food wrappers, juice boxes, windshield wiper blades, conduit, old underwear, t-shirts and other items. Pack 531 was working to earn the Cub Scout World Conservation Award.

City spokesperson Anna Clark said, "The Trash-Off offered a unique opportunity for McKinney residents to clean up McKinney by volunteering to pick up litter along roadways and creeks within the city."
