*Big government last week protected us against the evil machinations of Big Steel. After digging up the balance we owed on our 1961 income tax we are wondering who's going to protect us against Big Government
*Uncle Dan, in a rare personal interview last week, said he read a headline in an old-fashioned country paper about somebody “going to eternal rest.” Until he read the story, he thought it meant the guy had got a government job.
*The yankees who make a business of thinking up jokes about filthy-rich Texans have come up with one about a fancy night club in Dallas where, instead of calling a cab for you, they add $2,000 to the check and give you a car. This is known as a Corvair charge.
Methodist revival set for April 22 to April 27
The Rev. J. Charles Shelly, pastor of First Methodist Church Plano, will be the preacher for a six-night revival service which will begin in the First Methodist Church, Celina, Sunday, April 22.
The Rev. Bob Bush, pastor of St. Mark's Methodist Church, Wichita Falls, will be song leader. A nursery will be provided each evening.
The Rev. Sherrell Hendricks, pastor of the Celina church states that preaching each evening will be from Luke 20:9-18, and “will be relevant to our life situation and filled with real spiritual power.” The public is invited, he said.
Paul Lewis named to NTSU Honor Society
Paul Lewis, freshman student in North Texas State University, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Lewis of Celina, has been nominated for membership in Phi Eta Sigma, national honorary society for freshmen men.
Only college freshmen who show outstanding scholastic achievements are eligible for membership, and only five percent of the freshmen men meet the qualifications.
NTSU students named to the organization will be honored with a recognition dinner in Marquis Hall on the campus May 5.
Mrs. E.J. Lewis named to school tax post
Mrs. E.J. Lewis has been named tax-assessor-collector for Celina Independent School District, succeeding Claude DuVall, resigned.
Mrs. Lewis is presently employed as receptionist at the office of Dr. M.W. Graham, where she will remain for two weeks before taking over her new duties.
Former Celina woman died Tuesday in Pampa
Mrs. Bob Alford, a former resident of Celina, died in a hospital in Pampa, Texas, Tuesday. Her home was in Pampa.
Funeral service was in the First Baptist Church, Pampa, Wednesday afternoon with burial in a Pampa cemetery.
Mrs. Alford was Mrs. Vernie Pipes when she lived in Celina. Mr. Pipes, one-time pastor of Celina's Baptist Church, died in Celina in 1954.
Mrs. Alford was a native of White Deer, and was Miss Roxie Dean Creech before her first marriage.
Among Celinaites who attended the funeral in Pampa were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rucker, Mrs. Raymond Huddleston, and Mrs. H.L. Merritt.
Inter Se Club meets with Mrs. Glendenning
“Freedom through self expression” was the topic for study at a meeting of the Inter Se Club Thursday of last week in the home of Mrs. Jim Glendenning. Mrs. J.G. Mann presided over a business session in the absence of the president and vice president.
Mrs. Ben Ownsby gave a report on a Trinity District convention in Dallas which she attended the previous weekend. Mrs. Jim Glendenning directed the program and Mrs. W.O. Rolater gave the devotional. Mrs. Robert Short talked about “Graphology,” presenting interesting related quirks of character and personality to handwriting.
In a recent meeting of the club Mrs. F.A. Allen was hostess and J.T. Nelson, principal of Celina High School, was guest speaker. His subject was “Are We Educating for the Age of Science?” Mrs. Robert A. Jones was a guest at the meeting.
Funds needed for Old Union Cemetery
Those who have relatives or friends buried in Old Union cemetery and who may wish to contribute to a fund for the cemetery's upkeep may send their contributions to Mrs. R.N. Walker, Celina.
Work has been underway this week on a cleanup of the cemetery.
Surveying crew working on Highway 289 this week
A Highway Department surveying crew has been at work on Highway 289 from Prosper to a point just south of Celina in the last week or two.
County Engineer John Taylor said the surveyors were not finished and would be back next week to complete their job.
Mr. Taylor said he hoped purchases of right-of-way would begin later this year. State and county matching funds have already been allocated for right-of-way purchase.
The county engineer said he hoped the contract for FM Road 428, southwest of Celina, would be let in June, and surely not later than July. “We think you'll be riding on asphalt on that road by Christmas,” he told The Record today.

From The Record for April 15, 1937
Calvin Snodgrass was graduating from North Texas State Teachers College with a bachelor of science degree.
Fred Marks and Roy McWilliams had gone to Abilene to a W.O.W. Convention.
The city council had just retired $2,000 in waterworks bonds and $1,000 in street improvement bonds. Tax collections had increased greatly following filing of several suits against delinquents.
State Highway 289 was then Highway 14. Grayson County officials had been quoted as saying that an unpaved gap between Dorchester and Highway 82 would probably be improved that year.
News of Alla Community

Alla homecoming will be held April 29 at the school building. Come and bring a basket lunch to be spread at noon. All ex-students and ex-teachers and neighbors are invited to attend.
Rev. and Mrs. Bob Riddlehoover attended church Sunday morning at the Marilee Baptist Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Porter Miller and Vicki, of Sherman and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny McMillen of Denison spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. and Mrs. S.A.Miller.
Mrs. Hershel Flanery visited her mother, Mrs. J.W. Morriss, and Miss Ida Morriss in Sherman Wednesday afternoon of last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Billy Ray Cates and sons of Frisco visited his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Cates, Saturday evening.
