The Little Elm Fire Department Auxiliary has opened online registration for its fourth annual golf tournament, which will be held on April 27 at Frisco Lakes Golf Course.
Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a round of golf, a dinner buffet and win awards and prizes while supporting the LEFDA and local firefighters. Players are encouraged to register online at the new event website at http://lefdagolf.dojiggy.com, or by clicking "register now" at www.lefda.org, which will speed up the check-in process on the day of the event.
"We had to process so many payments on-site during check-in last year," said LEFDA President Michael Gaffney. "We really need everybody to try to register and pay online. It'll make everything go smoother."
Online registration will be open until April 20. For those who cannot pay or register online, they can email Gaffney at president@lefda.org.
The tournament is the LEFDA's only fundraiser. Proceeds from the event will go into the organization's general fund to purchase construction supplies for its Emergency Response Unit, as well as batteries and smoke detectors for its Smoke Detector Program.
Last year, more than 100 golfers played a round of golf at the 18-hole golf course, which allowed the LEFDA to raise $5,000.
"Each year we've been able to increase it, and each year we've been able to increase participation," Gaffney said. "I'd like to fill the golf course up this year."
The tax-deductible registration fee includes green fee, cart, range balls, lunch, awards ceremony and buffet, a goody bag with one "Green Fee Pass" to each place of Riverchase, Ridgeview Ranch and Frisco Lakes Golf Clubs, a Frisco Lakes logo ball, a bag of golf tees and commemorative T-shirt.
For individual players, the registration fee is $100; for a team of four players, registration is $400. There are no refunds for cancellations, but registration may be transferred to another player. Notify the LEFDA in writing through mail or email on or before April 20.
The day's activities will begin at 11 a.m. with check-in. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed to be brought in, however beverage tickets will be available for purchase during check-in that includes alcohol. Two beverage carts will be on the course during the tournament. Beverage tickets cost $4, which a percentage of the cost benefitting the LEFDA.
The Golf Ball Drop Contest will be held at 1 p.m. at the golf club. Participants can purchase an entry for $5 for each golf ball, and may have multiple entries. In the contest, golf balls will be placed in a container that will be hoisted above a target hole by a ladder on the Little Elm fire truck.
The golf ball that drops into the target hole will be declared the winner. If more than one falls into the hole, the golf balls will be dropped again from the ladder. If no balls go into the hole, the golf ball closest to the hole will be the winner.
The winner of the contest will receive an iPad II, which is valued at approximately $450.
The actual tournament will begin at 2 p.m. and will be a Four-Man Scramble format. Men are asked to wear collared shirts, pants or hemmed shorts. For women, attire should include a collared or sleeved shirt, pants, hemmed shorts or capris. Players should wear soft spiked golf shoes. Denim or blue jeans are not allowed.
A BBQ dinner and awards ceremony will be held after the tournament. Trophies will be handed out for first through third places, last place, longest drive and closest to the pin. Players will also have the chance to win cash or prizes for hole-in-ones.
For the tournament, players may also purchase Gimme Strings and mulligan tickets. A Gimme String allows players to place a golf ball closer to the pin using string, but only one string per golfer per hole may be used. Scorecards must reflect the use of the string and both must be turned in at the end of the tournament.
A mulligan allows players to take an additional shot from anywhere. Only 13 mulligans are allowed during one round. Gimme Strings and mulligans may not be used on any prize holes such as Hole-in-One or the Money Hole. There are no refunds for either item.
The LEFDA is still accepting sponsorships for the event. Sponsorships range from $150 to $2,500, but some have already filled up such as the Golf Ball Drop. Others are still available such as several Hole-in-One sponsorships or the Firefighter 4-Some.
"A company can sponsor four firefighters to golf as opposed to those guys having to pay the green fee," Gaffney explained.
Email golf@lefda.org to sign up for a sponsorship.
The group is currently putting together a committee that will help with a firefighter injury recovery fund for those injured while on duty. The fund will help the firefighters financially.
"Over time that fund will build in volume so we've got money there to help," Gaffney said.
The LEFDA is volunteer-run and proceeds from the tournament do not pay the members.
"We do this because we love what the fire service does for the community," Gaffney said.
Frisco Lakes Golf Club is located at 7170 Anthem Drive in Frisco. In case of inclement weather, the tournament will be rescheduled.
"If you had a great time last year, come our and have a great time this year," Gaffney said.
