Mansfield Legacy's Walker taken to hospital: Shortstop suffers from dehydration during decisive playoff game against Plano

Published: Saturday, May 5, 2012 6:31 PM CDT
GRAPEVINE -- Mansfield Legacy shortstop Briana Walker began Saturday hoping to help her softball team win an area playoff series against Plano Senior.

She would leave the field in an ambulance before the game was completed.

With temperatures hovering near 90 degrees, Walker stepped to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning of Plano's eventual 10-6 win. She quickly stepped out of the box and wobbled before the Lady Broncos coaches checked on her.

This set off a lengthy and heated argument in the stands.

Plano fans called on their players to take a knee while Walker, who was replaced by Josephine Trammell, was being evaluated. Thinking the yells were directed at Walker and the Legacy coaching staff, the Lady Broncos' fans began yelling at the Lady Wildcats' fans with the back-and-forth bickering continuing for two minutes and multiple people walking to either side in an attempt to quell the conflict.

The fans played a part soon thereafter too as a call for an EMT or paramedic was made into the stands with multiple Plano fans going to assist. Among those checking on Walker's condition was Vines High School freshman Ryder Reed.

"[Walker] is really dehydrated," she said. "She hasn't been drinking water, even when she was thirsty, so she is overheated. They have ice all over her right now and are calling an ambulance to get her an IV."

Seeing the incident took its toll on both teams.

"It was hard to focus after that," said Kristen Miles, Plano senior outfielder. "[Walker] was so sweet; she would say good job every time we got a hit and we were on second base."

Lady Wildcats head coach Cynthia Zea was glad to see such sentiment.

"Our girls are class acts, so of course they are going to be worried about one of their fellow players," she said.

Zea had similarly kind words for Legacy's shortstop.

"Not only is [Walker] a very good player," she said, "she was so nice throughout the series. You never want to see anything like this happen, especially to a girl of such character."

In an effort to ensure nothing similar occurred to any of her players, the Lady Wildcats coach called timeout with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

"The dirt gets so hot during these games and it looked like [senior pitcher Kat Batey] might have needed a break," Zea said, "so I figured what better time to go out there."

"I think coach just wanted to calm everyone down," Batey added, "and it worked."

As Zea brought Gatorade to her players, a fire truck arrived to check on Walker. The ambulance pulled up with one out in the top of the seventh to take Walker to the hospital.

Walker's condition was not immediately available following the game, but supporters of Plano and Legacy had quashed their brief beef as numerous fans were seen conversing following the Lady Wildcats' 10-6 win and 2-1 series triumph.
