Ordinarily, winning fourth place in a prime-time nationally-televised program would be a good thing. And it is.
But third place would have been much better for McKinney's Hollie Cavanagh. If she had been named to the top three in this week's "American Idol" competition, she would have come home in a private jet, with a parade, concert and screaming fans awaiting her.
Hollie, a McKinney Boyd High School graduate, has been wowing "American Idol" viewers for the past several weeks with her amazing voice and ability to stir a crowd with her emotions.
Nevertheless, Hollie is returning home from Hollywood to a huge number of fans from McKinney and all over North Texas, including many who crowded into the McKinney Performing Arts Center's Courtroom Theater for a watch party to cheer and support their local diva.
American Idol viewers on Thursday night had to wait until the last five minutes of the hour-long program to learn who would be bumped off and leave the final three to continue the competition.
The program ended with the announcement that American Idol would be saying goodbye to Hollie.
Although a native of Great Britain, Hollie took the news with the grace and style of a true Texan. The show ended with her singing a powerful song, "The Climb," while hugging the other contestants and shaking hands with the judges.
Anna Clark, communications and media manager for the city of McKinney, said the city will plan something special for Hollie after she comes home. Details will be listed at www.mckinneytexas.org and on the city's Facebook page.
As one of the top 10 "American Idol" contestants, Hollie will perform on a national tour with "American Idol" starting within a few weeks. The tour will be at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on July 29.
Tickets are available at www.americanidol.com/tour.

" Holly is infinitely better than PhilPhil. The goal of AI is to sell ads and not to find the best singer. Phillips is there because girls vote for him and not because he has talent, which he doesn't. Jessica and Joshua are good, but not as good as Holly. If Phil wins, that will be a waste of $5mil. He'll never be heard from again. "
