Water polo: Carroll teams finish fifth at state tourney
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
Despite beginning its preparations just eight weeks before state, Southlake Carroll's boys and girls water polo teams continue to show improvements.
The Dragons and Lady Dragons each finished fifth May 4-5 at the TISCA Water Polo State Championships in Austin, an improvement on last season's respective ninth-place finishes.
Carroll entered the tourney seeded first from the North region for girls and second from the region for boys.
Sterling had won the state title in five of the past six years, but it was not to be this season as the Lady Dragons emerged with an 8-7 sudden death victory in three overtimes.
The Lady Dragons met their match in the semifinals, however, coming up short against Clear Creek, 13-8 before falling in the consolation semifinals against Clear Springs, 13-6.
In the boys competition, the Dragons defeated Cypress Creek Friday, 7-4, but then lost to Clear Creek, 13-7.
The team rebounded Saturday to defeat Clear Falls, 11-8, but dropped their match in the consolation semifinals against St. Marks of Dallas, 13-8.
Carroll also had four players earn all-state honors, including Aaron Cox (boys first team), Eden Henderson (girls second team), Veronica Hadley (girls honorable mention) and Nicole Stotts (girls honorable mention).
