The Mesquite Rotary Club hosted its annual Scholarship Recognition and Awards Luncheons at the Dallas Athletic Club on May 1st and 8th. At the events, the top ten candidates for graduation in the Class of 2012 from each Mesquite ISD high school, Sunnyvale High School, and Dallas Christian School were honored, and scholarship awards of $1,000 each were presented to students from each of these schools, and the Mesquite Academy. Also, three students from the Eastfield College Rotaract Club received $500 scholarships. This investment by the club in the future of these deserving area scholars totaled $9,500.
Receiving the $500 scholarships were Eastfield College students Cristal Aldrete, Ana Chavez, and Angel Isaac. Receiving the $1,000 Rotary Club scholarships this year were Kelsey Faith Durden of Dallas Christian School, Ryne Scott Zmolik of Sunnyvale High School, Karina Mariel Perez of the Mesquite Academy, Shelby Brown of Mesquite High School, William Chase Ashworth of North Mesquite High School, Nancy Nguyen of West Mesquite High School, Danya Teresa Rangel-Rivera of Poteet High School, and Chaise Lindbergh of John Horn High School.
The Mesquite Rotary Club scholarship committee for 2012 was chaired by Jim Wade, and also included Dr. James Griffin, Ted Chinn, and Jerry Ferguson. In making the award decisions, the committee considered the students academic records, their involvement in school activities, their community service activities, and financial need.
The funds underwriting the cost of these scholarship awards come from the proceeds of the Mesquite Rotary Clubs annual fundraising Rotary Bike Ride, which is presented this year by Agape Home Healthcare of Mesquite. The next Rotary Ride is coming up at Rodeo Center on Saturday morning, May 26th. For registration or more information on the event, visit www.mesquiterotarybikeride.com.
