Four athletes claim medals at UIL state track and field meet
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
A handful of local track and field athletes headed to Austin last week in search of treasure, and while none of them struck gold, there were several strong performances, including four that resulted in a spot on the medal stand at the UIL state track and field meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The closest an athlete came to winning a state championship came in the 4A triple jump, where Poteet's Lauren Nwegbo claimed silver with a second-place finish.
Nwegbo, who had the second-best qualifying mark, posted a jump of 39-01.75 which was better than all others in the field with the exception of Rockwall-Heath's Briana Richardson, who took first with a leap of 40-05.25.
Rowlett's Travia Jones entered the 5A 400 meters with the fourth-fastest qualifying time but was able to shave nearly a second off that time to earn a bronze medal in the event in a time of 54.53 seconds. Tiaira Carter of San Antonio Wagner won the event at 53.84 seconds.
Sunnyvale's Andi Morgan was third in qualifying and that standing carried over into the 2A 100 hurdles, where she won the bronze medal in a time of 14.97 seconds.
West Mesquite junior Eldridge Massington was an alternate qualifier after placing third at regionals but made the most of his chance at state, taking third place in the 4A 100 meters in a time of 10.74 seconds. That was narrowly off the pace of Cameron Burrell of Fort Bend Ridge Point, who crossed the finish line in a time of 10.57.
Massington nearly added a second medal, but the West Mesquite 400 relay team was edged at the wire as they took fourth place.
That was one of several close calls.
Mesquite's Jordan Bracy entered the 5A 110 hurdles with the best qualifying time in the state, but his time of 14.33 seconds only earned him an eighth-place finish.
Horn's Rhenique Williams took sixth in the 200 meters in a time of 24.65 seconds in an event won by Plano East's Jennifer Madu, who got the better of many of her local competitors.
Horn's Aatiyah Henry, another alternative qualifier, was seventh in the long jump, which was won by Madu, while the same was true for Rowlett's Taylor Glenn, whose mark of 38-09 in the triple jump was just short of the medal stand and well short of Madu's jump of 42.04.25.
