The American Heart Association's HeartChase is headed to the area. The event will take place at Paschall Park, 799 W. Bruton Road in Mesquite, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on April 21. The event features a combination of activities inspired by the television shows The Amazing Race and Minute-to-Win-It.

"It is a mixture of activities similar to what you would see on The amazing Race or Minute-to-Win-It. Teams of two to five people join together and go to different checkpoints within the park," said Julie Thayer, youth market director for the American Heart Association Southwest Affiliate. "Once they are at the checkpoint they do different activities and get points. One person from each team needs to have a smartphone so they can scan QR codes."

She said there will also be hidden tags throughout the park that will allow teams to accumulate extra points.

“This really is a fun event. The competitors get to do some fun activities. The goal is to raise heart health awareness and also to raise funds for research and education,” Thayer said.

Thayer said the event is fairly new to the American heart Association. They have recently held similar events in Rockwall and Wylie. The Mesquite event will be the last one in eastern part of Dallas County.

“This is something that we developed because we thought it would be fun and would use current technology to help us raise funds,” Thayer said. “This type of event is geared towards smaller communities of 100,000 or less people.”

Thayer said Mesquite was chosen because of the city and communities involvement to promote heart health awareness in the past.

“Mesquite was chosen out of many places in the U.S. because Mesquite is very interested in being heart healthy and has always given us great support especially in the schools,” Thayer said.

To sign-up to participate in the event, visit heartchase.org and select Mesquite. Once there a participant can wither create a team of two to five people or join an existing team. The cost to join the HeartChase is $25, however to increase the participation, the American Heart Association will discount the entry fee to $10 if the code Mesquite10 is entered during the registration process. There are a limited number of T-shirts that will be handed out to the first 250 participants that sign up for the event.

“The American Heart Association’s Mesquite HeartChase is sure to be an exciting and adventurous opportunity for families, friends and co-workers to race against the clock and compete against each other in heart healthy and fun challenges.  All you need is a smart phone and two hours to create lasting memories that will benefit a great cause.  I am excited to see the Mesquite community support this event,” said Chad Hastings, Town East Mall general manager.
