Diverse lineup of activities seeks to engage children at the library

Published: Monday, April 2, 2012 11:52 AM CDT
The Rowlett Public Library has several activities lined up for April to give children of all ages a chance to visit the library, learn and have fun.

One of the first big activities happens at 2 p.m. on April 14. The library will host an Alice in Wonderland themed event for children.

“They are going to have the opportunity to make crafts based on the characters in the book,” said Kathy Lane, library program coordinator. “One of the crafts will allow them to make mad hatter hats. They can also bring a camera and have their photo taken with the mad hatter.”

Lane said activities like the Alice in Wonderland event are important for the children to take part in.

“Kids need a little fantasy in their lives. This is good, wholesome entertainment. I really think they will get a kick out of it,” Lane said.

April 8 through 14 is National Library Week and the Rowlett Public Library will celebrate by having a couple of drawings where children can win baskets filled with prizes.

“We will have drawings for the different age groups and they can win baskets full of toys and all kinds of other surprises,” Lane said.

April 16 is the first day that patrons can register for the library’s annual tea party event. The library will host its 6th annual tea party event at 2 p.m. on May 12 at the Rowlett Community Centre, 5800 Main Street.

The event allows children to dress up and participate in a formal tea party.

“It’s going to be fantastic. There will be a fashion show presented by Lyndie’s Unique Boutique on Main Street and harpist Juanito Riveros will also play music,” Lane said. “This is our sixth year and it really is a beautiful event. There is a lot of china and the kids get a chance to dress up.”

She said that members of the Rowlett Community Chorale will also be in attendance to perform.

The tea party is open to everyone, ages five and up. The event is free with registration. Space is limited. To signup you must visit the library. No phone reservations will be taken.

The library will also continue its weekly story times during the month of April.
