The Mesquite Woman's Club celebrated the conclusion of its 75th anniversary year at a festive luncheon held at the Mesquite Arts Center on May 16th. Members and their guests enjoyed a catered luncheon, and local area educator, communications specialist, and humorist Rose-Mary Rumbley gave an entertaining program for the group. Incoming president Pat Venner presented 2010-2012 president Jan Davis with a gift in recognition of her leadership and service to the club. The hostesses for the luncheon provided individual vases of spring flowers that decorated the tables and served as party favors. The hostesses included Jeann Wisenbaker, Barbara Griffin, Linda Pimentel, Diane Rodriguez, and Linda Saams.
The Mesquite Woman's Club is the oldest woman's organization in Mesquite, and was organized in 1936 by women from the area's founding families. It grew out of the short-lived group called the Woman's Civic Club. Mrs. John E. Davis and several other former members of that group met at the First National Bank of Mesquite to organize the Mesquite Woman's Club. Mrs. N.E. Shands was named the first president, and she appointed a committee comprising Mrs. J.R. King, Mrs. John E. Davis, and Mrs. Frank Agnew to draw up the club's bylaws. By the club's second year, the tradition began of holding most meetings in the homes of club members, and also having special open meetings each year. This pattern continues today.
The Mesquite Woman's Club has a strong record of accomplishments and community support over the past 75 years. They sponsored the organization of the Mesquite Junior Woman's Club, which became the Mesquite Service League. They have regularly supported the Girl Scouts in Mesquite. In the early years, the club sponsored numerous initiatives to improve the city and its services, including obtaining door-to-door mail delivery in the city, and assisting in the establishment of the public library. The group has also been involved in many donations and initiatives to support the local schools and local students in need. In recent years, they provided an Eastfield College textbook scholarship, and they have donated funds to the MISD Council of PTA's Clothes Closet, the Centennial Park project, and to MISD middle school orchestra and band programs.
