Nelson leads panel’s study on mental health
From staff reports
Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today led the Health and Human Services Committee's review of Texas' mental health system.
“I recognize the importance of mental health and, despite our budget challenges, supported increased funding in this area last session," Nelson said. "Mental illness impacts the lives of thousands of Texans and strains the resources of our jails and hospitals. We must seek ways to better meet the mental health needs of our citizens and to ensure that our public mental health system is cohesive, efficient, and effective.”
The committee heard invited and public testimony on an interim charge calling for a review of the state's public mental health system. The panel must examine service delivery models, funding, community-based alternatives, and approaches to mental health used in other states.

Nelson represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
