Sachse falls to Bryan in baseball playoffs
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
In what was scheduled to be a best-of-3 series, Sachse and Bryan had one chance to lay it all on the line after rainy weather intervened in the area round last week.
The game went as expected with both teams rolling out their aces on the mound, but the Vikings were able to get just enough offense to pull out a 4-1 victory on Saturday at Viking Field.
Bryan moves on to play 12-5A rival Belton later this week in a regional quarterfinal best-of-3 series.
The best-of-3 series was scheduled to get started on Friday at Sachse. However, the Mustangs lost that home field advantage when wet conditions not only erased that day's game, but also turned it into a one-game series to be played in Bryan, where the weather had not been as severe.
"We treated it like a game three of a series," Burrow said. "We had just gotten done playing a third game against W.T. White where everything is on the line so we just had to go in with that same mindset. It was nothing new for the guys."
Sachse had its share of chances, putting runners on base in each of the first innings, with several in scoring position, but could only manage one run in the third inning.
That cut the Bryan lead to 2-1 but the Vikings would tack on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build some cushion.
That would be plenty for starter Ty Culbreth, who got stronger as the game progressed.
"We had a lot of guys on in the early innings and just couldn't get that big hit and get them around," Burrow said. "Our guys did a good job of creating but hitting with runners in scoring position just hurt us ... and then as the game went on he (Culbreth) really settled in. He had a good slider and a good fastball and he wasn't afraid to throw them with a full count with really threw us off ... you have to tip your hat to him."
It was a disappointing end of the season for the Mustangs, who finish with a 24-9 record. But Burrow was appreciative of what the team was able to accomplish this season and is optimistic about next year, when five position players and the entire playoff pitmching staff return.
"They did a great job all season long. We set some team records with lowest ERA in a season and most wins and those are all good milestones that will be good to shoot for in the future," Burrow said. "We have a lot of these guys back and we are looking forward to getting back out there."
