By Dan Eakin, deakin@starlocalnews.com
With early voting totals in and 48 of 202 precincts reporting Election Day results, Ben Smith and Terri Green appear to be headed for a July 31 runoff for the 380th District Court judge position.
In early returns, Smith was leading with 7,513 votes, or 36.75 percent, while Green had 6,026 votes, or 29.47 percent.
Jody Johnson had received 4,335 votes, or 21.20 percent, at the 8:30 p.m. report from the Collin County Elections Office. Chip Jarvis had received 2,571 votes, or 12.58 percent of the total.
Smith said Tuesday evening, "I am humbled to be moving forward into the runoff. My message of conservative values and strict adherence to the Constitution has resonated with voters and will continue throughout the remainder of my campaign. The 380th District Court is next in line to hear a capital murder case, and I am the only candidate with felony trial experience. I am looking forward to finishing strong, and want to thank my family and many volunteers who have campaigned tirelessly on my behalf."
Green said, "I want to thank Jody Johnson and Chip Jarvis for running a good campaign and for stepping up to serve the citizens of Collin County. My campaign is looking forward to a runoff and continuing to spread the positive word about my qualifications and experience to sit on the 380th bench as the next judge."
Johnson said, "I appreciate all of the voters who came out in this late primary. Although I did not get the outcome I wanted, I am pleased with the campaign that I ran. I hope voters will come back in July and support their candidates."
Jarvis could not be reached for comment.
Final election results are expected around 11 p.m. Tuesday.
