Bicentennial Park's Adventure Alley closes
By Heather M. Goodwin, hgoodwin@starlocalnews.com
After 17 years of use, the adventure alley playground in Bicentennial Park officially closed to make way for phase two of the park's improvements.
The Adventure Alley playground was designed by children, organized and planned by numerous community volunteers and funded through area businesses and individuals. The playground was built in 1995 and closed May 21.
"It was just time for something new," said Pilar Schank, communications and website manager. "The playground was older and worn down from daily use."
"We will demolish the playground to make way for the new playground that will be within Bicentennial Park," Schank said.
The design is currently underway for phase two of Bicentennial Park. Among the new and improved playground, it will include baseball fields, concession/restroom facility, batting cages, Park Boulevard connection to White Chapel Boulevard, satellite parks, maintenance facility, parking, trails, landscaping and irrigation improvements. Schank said the city has involved residents in the planning and developing of the park improvements.
"We invited the public to give their input all along this project. They were also invited to give further input at the opening of phase one of Bicentennial Park," Schank said. "We sought out public input about what the park should look like and what amenities it should have."
The first phase of the Bicentennial Park improvements was completed in September 2011, and has received a recent Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects for outstanding public park design. It included entry features, four foot plex baseball fields, concession/restroom building, six tennis courts, detention pond, Park Boulevard, parking and pathways.
Bicentennial Park is Southlake's premier park facility, and is comprised of the first land assembled for park purposes in the city. It is one of Southlake's largest parks and is home to baseball fields, the Liberty Gardens, Adventure Alley, the Community Center, the Lodge and the Southlake Tennis Center.
The Bicentennial Park improvement project is a multi-phase project set to transform the existing and proposed areas of the park into a safe and functional environment for everyone. Construction for phase two is anticipated to begin April 2013.
"Design is currently underway for Phase two that will include a state-of-the-art 1.3 acre playground that will be a unique centerpiece for the park, and encourage children of all abilities to explore, learn and imagine for generations to come," said Chris Tribble, director of community services.
