McKinney chiropractor Russell indicted on five counts

Published: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 11:45 PM CDT
A Collin County grand jury Tuesday returned five indictments against a former McKinney chiropractor who was arrested three times late last year on sexual assault charges.

David Allen Russell bonded out immediately upon being arrested each time, in October, November and December. Tuesday's indictments against Russell included three for aggravated sexual assault of a child, one for sexual assault of a child and one for sexual assault.

Russell, who was then owner of Russell Chiropractic, also had taught stretching and conditioning classes at Taylor Dance Studio in McKinney. The alleged offenses reportedly occurred either at his chiropractic office or at the studio.

After being arrested the first time last October, complaints about Russell began pouring into the McKinney Police Department, and MPD was later criticized for not immediately responding to the complaints. The MPD has since taken action to help make certain that such complaints are better handled in the future.

A warrant for Russell's arrest on the first charge of sexual abuse of a child was issued last Oct. 28, and a second Nov. 4. He was arrested the third time Dec. 7.

In addition to facing charges of sexually assaulting children, Russell will also face charges of sexual assault against at least one adult. At one time, it was reported that as many as 18 complaints had been registered against Russell.

Crystal Levonius of the Collin County District Attorney's Office's Crimes Against Children Division said Russell will now be offered a first appearance before a judge and then a second appearance. She said the prosecution and defense will then meet to discuss the situation.

If Russell continues to plead not guilty as he has in the past, the case could go to trial within three or four months, she said.

Shannon Miller of the Crimes Against Children Division has been assigned prosecutor in Russell's case.
