Runoffs set for judge seats

Published: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 2:43 PM CDT
Two major Collin County races will be decided during the statewide Republican primary runoff election July 31.

Republicans Ben Smith and Terri Green will face each other to see who wins the 380th District Court judge nomination, and Barnett Walker and Sharon Ramage will continue their race to win the judgeship for County Court-at-Law, Number Two. No Democratic candidates are running for the two positions.

Smith and Green were the two top vote-getters for the 380th District judge post in Tuesday's Republican primary. Smith received the most votes, 12,162, or 35.86 percent, while Green got 9,679 votes, or 28.54 percent.

Jody Johnson came in third with 7,472 votes, or 22.03 percent, and Chip Jarvis received 4,600 votes, or 13.56 percent.

The winner of the runoff election will fill the vacancy created when Suzanne Wooten, the former 380th District judge, was found guilty of bribery and related charges last November.

Smith said Tuesday evening, "I am humbled to be moving forward into the runoff. My message of conservative values and strict adherence to the Constitution has resonated with voters and will continue throughout the remainder of my campaign. The 380th District Court is next in line to hear a capital murder case, and I am the only candidate with felony trial experience. I am looking forward to finishing strong and want to thank my family and many volunteers who have campaigned tirelessly on my behalf."

Green said, "I want to thank Jody Johnson and Chip Jarvis for running a good campaign and for stepping up to serve the citizens of Collin County. My campaign is looking forward to a runoff and continuing to spread the positive word about my qualifications and experience to sit on the 380th bench as the next judge."

Johnson said, "I appreciate all of the voters who came out in this late primary. Although I did not get the outcome I wanted, I am pleased with the campaign that I ran. I hope voters will come back in July and support their candidates."

Jarvis could not be reached for comment.

In the race for County Court-at-Law, Number Two judge, Walker received the most votes with 14,258, or 43.44 percent. Ramage got 11,568 votes, or 35.24 percent. Gene Sera received 6,997 votes, or 21.32 percent.
