Sanford wins Republican nomination for District 70 seat

McKinney resident Scott Sanford should soon take over the Texas House of Representatives District 70 seat, after defeating Bracy Wilson in the Republican primary on Tuesday night.
With no Democratic challenger, Sanford likely ensured his spot in Austin for the 83rd Legislature in January.
"I'm just humbled by all the friends, family and community support," Sanford said. "It was definitely a team effort. It's amazing and humbling at the same time."
Sanford was ahead by a similar margin when early voting ended a week ago, but said he and his campaign supporters still worked until about 7 p.m. Tuesday.
"We were hopeful and had reasons to be optimistic, but we didn't know if it'd be by a handful of votes or a large margin," he said. "We took nothing for granted."
At election's end, he maintained his edge over Wilson, a McKinney resident and founder of HelpCharters, LLC, which offers consulting and management for public charter schools.
Sanford said Wilson called to congratulate him soon after final results were in, for which Sanford was "highly appreciative."
"He was a very hardworking candidate, so it was a very spirited race," Sanford said.
According to his campaign website, Sanford hopes to focus on the following issues as a member of Congress: expanding legal immigration while safeguarding the Texas borders, preventing higher taxes and further use of the state's Rainy Day Fund, improving public education by spending a larger percentage of funds inside the classroom, and, in general, decreasing the scope of state government.
"From a state representative perspective, it's going to be all about the state budget," he said during his campaign. "We think that it's going to be another brutal two years beginning in 2013. There's going to be a lot of hard work. We have to balance the budget and allocate resources to primary government functions."
A certified public accountant (CPA) and former small business owner, Sanford vies to work for legislation that shrinks government intrusion on businesses and entrepreneurs.
As a gun owner and hunter, he says he will not support any legislation that infringes on U.S. citizens' Second Amendment right to bear arms. He says he is 100 percent pro-life and believes "every baby is a miracle from the moment of conception."
He said though the election is over, the real work begins now.
"We're going to get together with other like-minded conservative legislators and begin to gameplan," he said. "We're going to study and learn as much as we can to be the best legislator possible."
Sanford will replace Ken Paxton in representing District 70, which includes McKinney, Prosper, Allen and the eastern portion of Frisco.
