Father’s Day car show

Published: Wednesday, June 6, 2012 11:30 PM CDT
Town East Mall is seeking to establish itself as more than just a shopping destination. The mall is looking to become an entertainment destination and strong community supporter. The mall is hosting a Father’s Day car show from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, in the parking lot near east I-635, between Sears and Dillard’s.

“We want to be more than shopping. We want to be a place you can come for family entertainment. This event will add to our lineup of activities,” said Chad Hastings, general manager of Town East Mall. “When I came to Town East Mall I looked to see what draws people here and what we didn’t have was an event like this.”

The free car show will feature classic, antique and collector cars and trucks. The vehicles will compete for awards, including best of show and 29 class and first place awards. There will be approximately 150 cars and trucks from throughout the region at the event.

“We are expecting 150 to 200 classic cars,” Hastings said.

There is no charge to attend the Car Show, but individuals are asked to bring canned goods or nonperishable food items to donate to Mesquite Social Services. Volunteers from the organization will be at the car show, accepting donations of food and money.

“General Growth Properties, which owns Town East Mall, has always had an initiative to find a way to do events for the community that give back,” Hasting said.

Along with the collection of cars and trucks, dad and other car enthusiasts will be entertained by the antics of an Elvis impersonator. There will be fundraising activities benefiting Mesquite Social Services, drawings for door prizes including Town East Mall Shop Etc. Gift Cards and more.

“When we aren’t having music we will have an MC handing out awards and prizes,” Hastings said.

Owners of cars and trucks who want to enter their vehicles in the car show should contact Art Hernandez at 214-893-3318 or Ron Standley at 972-998-3009. There is a $20 entry fee per vehicle. The first 50 entries will receive a free event t-shirt. In the event of inclement weather, the car show will be moved to Sunday, June 24.

“We are hoping that the car show will become an annual Father’s Day tradition for dads and children in [the area]. Anyone who knows about cars and trucks will surely appreciate the array of vehicles we are expecting. We will have cars from the 50s, muscle cars, hot rods, new models, old trucks and even a few motorcycles,” Hastings said. “We’re planning for the day to be a fun opportunity for dads to hang out with the kids. Mom can come and maybe pop into the mall to enjoy a little shopping too. I’ll be at the car show with my girls and I invite everyone to come and join in the fun.”
