Lewisville hosts inaugural TollTag Triathlon
By Heather M. Goodwin, hgoodwin@starlocalnews.com
It may seem like there is always a fundraiser somewhere in the area, but one Lewisville club has set its sights on hosting a different fundraiser.
Lewisville will host its first charity triathlon at 7 a.m. June 17 at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park, 1301 South Railroad St. Transition will open at 5:30 a.m. Those interested in participating may register at www.playtri.com/Lewisville.
"It was somewhat coincidental that this event will be held on Father's Day. We wanted to use the park when it was not highly used with other sporting events," said Donna Barron, member of the Greater Lewisville Kiwanis Club, who is organizing the event. "We hired Playtri to help us organize this event, and they said there were no other major events in the area that would conflict with ours. We also didn't think it would be an issue since its so early. This is the only triathlon event in Lewisville and the first at the park, but we're hoping to attract other triathlons."
"Our board voted on which organization this event should benefit, and it decided on CASA," Barron said. "We looked at a number of agencies, but decided that CASA was a fabulous agency and there are so many needs to be met with it. CASA is very organized, and we were able to form great partnership with them. We have helped them with events in the past and have a great partnership with CASA."
The triathlon will be a timed sprint-style event that will include a 500-meter open swim, 11-mile bike segment and 3.1-mile run. The swim and run will be held at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park, and the bike ride will start and end at the park. Participants can enter as individuals, or as part of a relay team dividing the three race segments. Aid stations will be located approximately every one mile. Each station will be equipped with water and PowerAde.
The cost for the triathlon is $90 and $115 for a relay team. Packet pick up is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Playtri Performance Center, 6465 E Mockingbird Lane in Dallas; from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Bicycles Plus, 1901 Long Prairie Road, Ste. 104 in Flower Mound and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Bicycles Plus. North Texas Tollway Authority is the title sponsor of the race. Hometown Suites in Lewisville is the official race hotel and is offering a discounted rate and grab-and-go breakfast for participants and spectators of the TollTag Triathlon. In addition to North Texas Tollway Authority, race sponsors include ProTow Wrecker, Bicycles Plus, Mixed Media Creations, Texas-New Mexico Power and LPL Financial Services.
"The NTTA gave us a check for $5,000 to help put this event on. They gave us cones for blocking lanes and worked with us so we will be able to close lanes on 121 business and Railroad Street during the race," Barron said. "I also can't say enough about Mixed Media Creations. They did all the designing the posters and everything else associated with the race."
Playtri will host a free pre-race clinic at 1 p.m. Thursday at the race site. USAT certified coach and race official Aaron Patel will conduct a course review, transition practice, race strategy and answer triathlon questions. Those interested should bring all supplies need for the bike and run.
"I encourage people to come out and have fun. You can do this race with a relay team if you don't feel ready to complete an entire triathlon," Barron said. "We currently have about 80 people signed up, but we want between 200-250. We would love to raise at least $5000."
Greater Lewisville Kiwanis Club holds multiple activities each year to help children in Denton County, including the Western Days Stick Horse Rodeo in September and the breakfast with Santa in December. The club meets at noon each Wednesday, and has a new program called Kiwanis Kasual for those who want to participate in the club but are unable to commit to weekly meetings.
CASA of Denton County is a nonprofit agency that provides trained community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children and also promotes community awareness about child abuse issues.
