LISD approves raises, compensation model

Published: Monday, June 11, 2012 11:12 PM CDT
The Lewisville ISD Board of Trustees on Monday unanimously approved a new compensation model for its employees, which includes pay increases.

The new model is a result of a study conducted by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). Results and recommendations were presented to the board during a work session last week.

The new model is aimed to simply the salary structure that had been described as too complicated.

Under the new system, all employees will receive a compensation increase of 3 percent above the salary midpoint of every job category.

For teachers, that means a starting salary for new hires of $47,500 for 10 months. The district had been paying $45,000.

The new salary is expected to push LISD into the top among area districts as far as new teacher salaries.

According to the TASB study, which examined 20 districts, mostly in North Texas, LISD was 17th in first-year teacher salaries.

Continuing teachers will receive $1,600 added to their 2011-12 salary, up to a maximum base salary of $69,000 for 10 months. Teachers who are above the base salary limit would likely receive an increase of $500.

LISD’s existing structure had 40 pay steps for teachers.

Teachers with master’s degrees would receive a flat stipend of $1,000, though existing teachers with a master’s degree who already receive more than $1,000 would be allowed to maintain that level.

Other employees will have a different system while following the plan of receiving 3 percent above the median salary for that particular group.

Administrators and professionals, for example, will have 11 groups, or pay grades, such as principals, assistant principals, etc.

Administrative support will have nine pay grades, auxiliary and information technology employees will have eight and instructional support employees would have six.

Employees in the same pay grade will receive the same dollar amount increase.

Also, employees will be paid at least the minimum of the assigned pay range.

Before the change, employees were given a 3-percent pay increase, but it was rolled into a step increase.

Each salary schedule will have a maximum limit.

“I think this will make our pay scale more sustainable,” said Board Secretary Julie Foughty. “It’s a good investment to give our staff an increase, but in the end, it’s going to fit into our budget because of the change that we’re making to the system.”
