Council recognizes teacher for donating kidney to student’s father

Published: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 9:14 PM CDT
At the June 12 Highland Village City Council meeting, the council recognized Marie Bell, a kindergarten teacher at Highland Village Elementary School.

Bell learned the father of one of her students was in dire need of a kidney transplant. Bell volunteered to participate in the donor screening process, was found as a match and underwent surgery to donate one of her kidneys to her student’s father, Marshall Smith.

“It’s hard for me to imagine the sacrifice Ms. Bell has made; she is truly a role model for all,” stated Mayor Pat Davis.

Also at this meeting, the council approved resolutions appointing members to fill unexpired terms on the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Highland Village Community Development Corporation.

Current Alternate Place 1 on the Planning & Zoning Commission, Austin Adams, was appointed to Place 3, expiring in September 2012. Michael Lombardo was appointed Alternate 1, expiring in September 2013. Council members Bill Meek and Michelle Schwolert were appointed to the Highland Village Community Development Corporation to fill terms expiring in September 2013.

During the city manager’s report, the HVTV Update invited residents to attend the free Concert in the Park at Pilot Knoll Park on June 29 where Jolie Holliday will be playing. The update informed residents the city is in Water Conservation Phase 2. This phase prohibits landscape watering between 10 AM and 6 PM.

Also, the city is now accepting applications for appointments to boards and commissions. An application can be filled out online at www.highlandvillage.org and submitted to the city secretary’s office. Appointments are made in September.
