Severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc on the Metroplex last week, including a lightning strike that started a two-alarm residential fire on Brentwood Lane in The Colony.

At about 6:20 p.m. on June 6, lightning struck the garage of the single-story home resulting in a significant fire that ultimately spread to the attic. Fire Chief Scott Thompson said TCFD units were on the scene by 6:25 p.m. and had the fire under control within 5 minutes.

The fire consumed the garage, which contained a vehicle at the time of the blaze. Additional fire damage was done to the attic. The remainder of the home suffered smoke and water damage.

Beyond the lightning strike itself, Thompson said the weather neither hindered nor helped firefighters battle the fire. No injuries were reported.

TCFD was busy again on Sunday fighting a grass fire in the Austin Ranch area which consumed 20 acres of grassland. The initial call came in from Plano FD at about 1 p.m. as the fire started in the area of Sonoma and Toad Hollow in the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve but quickly spread to The Colony along Windhaven Parkway.

Eight departments were called in to help fight the fire. Access to the blaze was hindered by wet conditions from recent rains, preventing vehicles from reaching the scene, Thompson said. Firefighters were forced to attack the fire on foot.

The fire was under control by 4:45 p.m. Damage was contained to woodlands and pasture. No injuries were reported.
