Shoplifter leads police on car chase

Published: Friday, June 15, 2012 4:13 PM CDT
Police have arrested a shoplifter who led them on a car chase from Allen to McKinney on Friday afternoon.

At 11:52 a.m., Allen police received an emergency call from the Walmart store at 730 W. Exchange Parkway in Allen, where a man had escaped the store's loss-prevention unit's detainment, injuring one employee's arm when he slammed a door on it, said Sgt. Jon Felty of the Allen Police Department.

"He decided, for whatever reason, he wasn't going in today," Felty said.

The suspect, who police described as a white male in his early 40s, left the store in a white Mazda pickup truck and proceeded to lead Allen police on a chase onto U.S. Highway 380. McKinney police joined the chase and eventually cornered the suspect in a grass area behind the Walmart at U.S. 380 and Custer Road.

The suspect ignored authorities' pleas to stop and exit his vehicle, so a McKinney police officer shot at the truck's tires to disable it. Once the truck was stopped, police took the suspect into custody.

The suspect gave Allen police numerous false names, Felty said, so police had not yet determined his identity by Friday evening. Because the suspect injured the Walmart employee during his escape, his shoplifting charge was upgraded to robbery, and by then evading arrest, the man made it a criminal offense not to reveal his correct name.

Police have fingerprinted the suspect and will continue the investigation until they figure out his correct identity.
