Climbing the Ladder: Camp hired as new McKinney head volleyball coach

The recent hiring of new McKinney head volleyball coach Jessica Camp, who was formerly the head coach at Frisco Heritage, comes as the latest move for a program that has seen more than its share of changes during the last year.
Camp served as an assistant coach at Lindale High School, where she played high school volleyball, and Frisco Wakeland before being hired as head volleyball coach at Frisco Heritage when it opened in 2009 with only a junior varsity team. In 2010, its year of varsity competition, Heritage went 17-25 and finished a win short of the playoffs. They wouldn't have to wait long to clear that milestone, though. In 2011, the Lady Coyotes finished third in District 9-4A to qualify for the playoffs and ended the year with 27-10 overall record.
I came from Lindale, which was just rich in tradition and I like that, Camp said. I know that McKinney, being the original high school, has a lot of traditions and that appealed to me because it was the way I grew up.
Things show no sign of settling done for the Lionettes, who will move up in classification next year into a district alongside some of the largest schools in the state. The biggest of the bunch, Plano East, has nearly three times as many students as McKinney. The district also includes state semifinalist McKinney Boyd, which returns a roster capable of making it t o the state finals again.
Camp won't get a chance to coach the Lionettes until August, though she was able to hold a pair of open-gym sessions shortly after being hired in order to meet her new players. In the meantime, she will just have to bide her time until her first year at McKinney begins.
It's just a waiting process, Camp said. I'm ready to get in and see what we can do. I think the kids are excited about it and the parents are excited about it. I'm definitely ready to go and see if we can do something special.
