Dump the Pump campaign continues

Published: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 5:46 PM CDT
Southlake commuters interested in trying the metroplex's rail or bus services will have a chance this week.

Fort Worth, Dallas and Denton transportation agencies have partnered up to sponsor a local version of the annual "Dump the Pump" campaign. North Texas drivers can trade a gas receipt of any amount for a free, all access pass to the DART, the T or DCTA fixed route services.

The passes will be valid from June 17-23. Southlake commuters can access the Trinity Railway Express from the Richland Hills or the Hurst/Bell stations. Once they have boarded, the passes can be redeemed at any location within the three service areas.

Morgan Lyons, director of media relations for DART, said the Dallas agency has participated in the campaign before, but he hopes this year will have the biggest turnout.

"In the past, the regional agencies have teamed up on different things including clean air promotions," Lyons said. "This seemed like a natural progression for us because mobility is such a major issue for people in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex."

The campaign started June 8 and will run through June 16. So far, DART and the T have passed out a total of about 560 passes. The agencies still have about 4,000 passes up for grabs.

Lyons said the rail services throughout the area are becoming more robust. Now it's possible to live in Fort Worth but go to school or work in Denton, he said.

"Even though gas prices have fallen, no one likes driving when it's hot," Lyons said. "We're asking people just to exchange something they already have for something they might not have tried before."

Interested Southlake drivers can pick up a pass Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the City of Denton's Twilight Tunes, or on Saturday at the Mockingbird Station Shops from 2 to 4 p.m.

A full list of pick up locations and times is available on the T's website, www.the-t.com.
