Council preps for next meeting

Published: Thursday, June 14, 2012 11:28 AM CDT
Other than discussing the new plumbing ordinance it was a relatively quiet Sunnyvale Town Council Monday night.

Councilwoman Paula Yates set the table for next town council, set June 25, by adding a discussion topic regarding banning smoking at public facilities.

“I would like to add a discussion item to discuss making Sunnyvale a non-smoking in all public areas including restaurants,” Yates said. “I did talk to the school and they have a no tobacco campus policy, I want to address public buildings, areas and restaurants.”

Public areas would include areas like town parks. There are several cities throughout Texas that are smoke-free cities. Many in the North Texas area include: Dallas, Plano, Mesquite, Rowlett and Rockwall.

Also for the next town meeting the council approved to have a joint special meeting with the Planning and Zoning commission in regards to an amendment to the approved plan for the residential units that are to go into the Planters Road area. A public hearing regarding those plans will be presented on July 9.

The ordinance for the joint hearing read:

The Town has received an application from VCZ Development for an amendment to a previously approved concept plan for the property at 201 Planters Road. A concept plan amendment requires public hearings and consideration by the Planning and Zoning Commission and Town Council. The attached ordinance simply calls for a joint public hearing of both bodies for July 9, 2012 to consider the proposed concept plan amendment. Proper notice will be sent to adjacent property owners for these hearings if this ordinance is adopted.

Additionally, staff has recommended a June 25 joint workshop with P&Z and Council

Other items on the agenda included a resolution to deny a municipality based rate change by Atmos energy.

“This relates to action items in January,” Town Manger Scott Campbell said. “A rate case had been initiated then and the case was suspended in March – and they want to us to deny the rate change request at this point so they can continue the process with the railroad commission.”

The Atmos representative onsite said the company is still working on negations with the railroad commission on the rate change and they requested the denial so more time can be given for those negations . The resolution for the denial passed 4- 0, Ronnie Henderson was not in attendance at Monday’s meeting.

The town council also postponed the report regarding cash handling and internal control assessments by town staff and the Webb Watch. Mayor Jim Phaup said because of a personal matter that arose with the contractor last minute on Friday, the council did not receive the report in time to evaluate and be properly prepared for the meeting. So all parties involved will have time to prepare for the public showing of the report they postponed the review until the next council meeting.
