MOAA meeting
On June 20 the North DFW Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will host a general membership meeting at Stacy’s Fine Furniture, 1900 Main Street in Grapevine.
Social hour begins at 6 p.m., and dinner will begin at 7 p.m. Entertainment will be by the Dallas Police Choir.

Fleming to address Flower Mound Area Republican Club
JoAnn Fleming, the executive director of Grassroots America – We the People -- and a former county commissioner in Smith County, will address the Flower Mound Area Republican Club on Tuesday.
She served as chairman of the TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee for the 82nd Texas State Legislature. She is a subject matter consultant in local government public policy development, organizational development, team building, political campaign management/strategy and grassroots activist training. A leader in the conservative movement for two decades, she has served on government boards, committees, and task forces.
Rafael Cruz, Cuban immigrant and father of U.S. Senate candidate Ted Cruz, is also scheduled to attend and address the club.
Meetings take place at Salerno's Restaurant, 3407 Long Prairie Road, just south of Cross Timbers Road, in Flower Mound. Meet and greet with optional ($10) buffet dinner starts at 6 p.m. The meeting and program start at 7 p.m.

Winners named in contest
Second-grader Isabella Lhneretz has been named the grand prize winner of the 2012 Water Conservation Poster Contest. Isabella was among many students who participated in the contest. Her poster featured many beneficial water conservation tips and water facts.
Lewisville Public Services Department sponsored the poster contest in recognition of National Drinking Water Week and Water Utilities Awareness Week. Winners were recognized during the Lewisville City Council meeting May 21, and winning posters were displayed in the Lewisville Public Library.

LPD places third in gun competition
Lewisville Police Department Lieutenant Mike Lane, Sergeant Ken Naffziger and Officer Rick Crociata recently traveled to Liberty Hill, Texas, to compete in a National Rifle Association-sponsored, three-gun competition. Once the final scores were tallied, Team Lewisville took home third place in the “Tactical Division” competition.
Members of the U.S. Military; contract security operators; and local, state, and federal law enforcement officers converged in the Texas Hill Country to test their training and skills. Participants traveled from as far away as California and Oregon for this competition. Seven complex stages of fire were constructed, requiring officers to use their patrol rifles, shotguns and duty handguns for successful navigation.
Library sets activities
The library will also host a summer grade school special. During the summer months, the library hosts Reading Detectives Specials for grades kindergarten through fifth every Monday evening at 7 p.m.
The library will host summer preschool specials. Join the fun with the clue finders for children ages three to six years old every Friday at 11:30 a.m.
The library has a special book club for all kids going into grades fourth and fifth. The Dragon Readers Book Club meets weekly from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The library will hold teen role playing sessions Monday nights. All Role Playing Sessions are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in teen point on the second floor of the library. Teens ages 12-18 are welcome.
The library hosts crafternoon for teens the first Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. Space is limited and reserved for sixth through 12th graders.
The library will host Clue Finders (ages 3-6) every Friday at 11:30 a.m.

LPD Explorers earn second place honors
Lewisville Police Department Explorers, accompanied by Officers Michael Hernandez and Emma Smith, travelled recently to Waxahachie to participate in the 28th Annual Texas Law Enforcement Explorer Advisors Association competition.
LPD Explorers took two second-place trophies and medals for Active Shooter and Driving While Intoxicated scenarios due to their attention to detail and the handling of these calls during the competition. Explorers competed against 127 other teams from across the state, as well as four teams from outside of Texas.
Explorers introduces youth to the career of law enforcement, allowing them to learn about the roles that police officers play in the community and it prepares them for careers in law enforcement through specialized training programs.
Free outdoor yoga class offered
Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater and its Old Town neighbor, Blue Anjou yoga studio, are teaming up to offer a series of free outdoor yoga classes on Wednesday evenings in the MCL Grand courtyard. Class will be held 7-8 p.m. each Wednesday now through June 27 and will be led by instructors from Blue Anjou. In the event of rain, the class will move inside the MCL Grand. No previous yoga experience is necessary to participate.

Camp registration now open
Registration is underway for the Xtreme Response Camp, to be held June 25-29. The camp, which provides a hands-on look at public safety and disaster preparedness, only has 30 slots available. Ages 12-16 are welcome at the camp, which will cover dive operations at Lewisville Lake, SWAT operations, vehicle extrication, live fire demonstration, K-9 search and rescue and more.

Summer skills clinic scheduled
For the first time, the Harlem Globetrotters are partnering with fitness club industry leader, 24 Hour Fitness, to host 120 summer skills clinics for youth across the U.S. Designed to take fans ages six to 14 behind the curtain to see the magic behind the Globetrotters’ electrifying basketball skills and tricks, participants will also learn about the importance of staying active and eating healthy. The clinics will take place at approximately 40 - 24 Hour Fitness clubs in nine states over a 10-week period this summer, including five locations in the Dallas metro area, June 18-22.
“We are excited to partner with 24 Hour Fitness on this innovative program that combines the world’s most entertaining basketball team and a national fitness leader,” said Harlem Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider. “These clinics are an extension of our brand and allow our fans to experience unparalleled interaction with our talented players, while promoting health and wellness for children in a fun setting.”
Each clinic will be conducted by current Globetrotter players. Two, three-hour clinics will be held in Lewisville June 20 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 2 to 5 p.m.
As part of the partnership, the Harlem Globetrotters will offer participants a voucher for a complimentary ticket to a 2013 World Tour game. Additionally, 24 Hour Fitness will offer free 3-day passes and discounts on club memberships to parents of clinic participants.

To supplement the live clinics, the Globetrotters will also run “how to” drills and skills videos on key social media platforms to extend the experience for clinic participants.
KLB seeks nominations
Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) recognizes one residential and one business each month from April through October for the “Yard of the Month.” KLB is looking for nominations. All nominations must be in by the 20th of each month. Photos of each property will be displayed on KLB’s website by the 25th of each month for voting.

Castle Hills plans activities
July in Castle Hills is all about fireworks, food trucks and fun. Bring the family and friends to the annual Freedom Festival and fireworks show July 4, and July 20 is free movie night. All events are free and take place in the Castle Hills Village Shops Plaza, 2560 King Arthur Boulevard at Lady of the Lake in the Castle Hills neighborhood.

Wednesday, July 4: 4th of July Freedom Festival, 5-9 p.m.: This year’s Freedom Festival starts off with the Float Parade at 5 p.m. Parade participants will meet at 4:30 at Polser Elementary. The parade will end at The Village Shops and Plaza with live music from Cover Down, an obstacle course, face painting, interactive games, two bounce houses and a photo booth. For $2, children can make arts and crafts at Enchanted Artist. Some of DFW’s most popular food trucks will be selling great food including Ruthie’s Rolling Café, The Butcher’s Son, Nammi Truck, Easy Slider and Cajun Tailgators. At approximately 9 p.m., a fireworks spectacular sponsored by Bright Realty will light up the night sky.
Friday, July 20, Movie Night at The Plaza: “The Muppets” (Rated PG), 7:30 p.m.: Bring your blankets and chairs to The Plaza and enjoy “The Muppets,” starring Jason Segal and Amy Adams. On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary and Mary from Smalltown, USA, help Kermit the Frog reunite the Muppets in a last ditch effort to raise money to save their theater.

Health fair set
The Back 2 School Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at Harmon High School, 1250 W. Round Grove Road. Back 2 School Health Fair is a coalition of churches, schools, social services and civic agencies collaborating with area businesses to give those less fortunate an opportunity to start the school year off right.
This is a family-friendly event providing an opportunity to increase awareness and availability of education, health and social services for parents and children through interactive, informative activities, displays and entertainment. The event will help students in the Lewisville Independent School District community with many of their school-related needs, including distributing free backpacks and school supplies to about 3,000 children.
As a one-stop destination, the fair will help prepare economically disadvantaged children go back to school through services provided by the community agencies that specialize in helping children.
Advance registration is required. Parents can register children and receive supply vouchers at one of four sign-up events being held at local Walmart stores: June 15, 2-6 p.m., Walmart store at 801 Main Street; June 22, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Walmart store at 190 E. Recycling drive set
Operation Re-write, Re-create and Recycle kicked off Memorial Day. The end of the school year is here and children will be bringing home loads of unused school supplies and backpacks. Angels In High Heels plans to collect these items and reuse them in many ways. The program allows resident to donate gently used school supplies from notebooks to footballs to musical instruments or to fund a classroom wish list. Used school backpacks will be filled with essential items for local homeless adults and youth. Small toiletries, socks and necessities will be placed in the recycled backpacks.
Residents may bring in items to Thrifty and Fabu“less” Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon 10 6 p.m. The store is located at 1596 W. Main St. Items may be dropped off through June 30.
