Weekly outdoor concerts set for June
By Dan Eakin, deakin@starlocalnews.com
Free city-sponsored Jammin' in June outdoor concerts are scheduled the next three Thursday nights.
The concerts will be from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Towne Lake Park, located at 1405 Wilson Creek Parkway in McKinney. Both admission and parking are free.
Groups will perform on McKinney's portable stage, to be set up in the clearing near the volleyball court. Attendees may bring blankets, chairs and picnic baskets. Alcohol is not permitted on city park grounds.
The McKinney Dance Band, scheduled for June 21, is a community-based, 16-piece big band that entertains with jazz and dance.
The Watusi Band, of Dallas, will perform June 28. The band has musicians from different parts of the world and offers a wide variety of music, including African music, gospel, funk and jazz.
The Jammin' in June series is a collaborative effort of the McKinney Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department.
Ryan Mullins, McKinney recreation superintendent, said, "We are delighted at the past success of Jammin' in June. The concerts are well-attended community events that showcase the breadth of local talent and our commitment to celebrating and supporting the arts and culture. Also, June is a wonderful time to enjoy McKinney's beautiful parks."
The city has sponsored some kind of music-in-the-park program each summer at least since 2007, said Anna Clark, city spokesperson.
"There was a concert series at Towne Lake Park in 2007 called Jazz in June," she said. "Jammin' in July were events in 2008 and 2009. The concert moved to June in 2010 and has continued in that month."
