PLANO -- A fiery two-vehicle accident shut down the northbound frontage road of State Highway 121 at Coit Road for several hours Thursday afternoon.

There were no fatalities, but both drivers involved in the accident were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment. Neither vehicle was carrying any other passengers.

Shortly before 1 p.m., an 18-wheeler carrying a full load of gravel was traveling southbound on Coit Road when it struck the passenger side of a Chevrolet Trailblazer driving northbound on the frontage road. The 18-wheeler then swerved and lost control before striking an electrical pole, said Officer David Tilley of the Plano Police Department.

Tilley said the cab of the truck caught fire, but the driver was able to escape under his own power. He was taken via CareFlite to Parkland Hospital, where was treated for burns and serious, but non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Trailblazer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, Tilley said, adding that things could have been much worse if the driver's side door of the vehicle was struck.

"We have not determined whose fault the accident was, but it is pretty clear that someone ran a red light," Tilley said. "This is a pretty busy intersection, so there were likely a lot of witnesses to the accident. Some people stopped, but others left the scene. We are asking those people to come forward and tell us what they saw."

Plano firefighters responded quickly and were able to extinguish the fire shortly after it started, Tilley said. With the fire out, crews from CoServ Electric worked to secure the damaged electrical pole so the truck and its trailer could be safely moved.

Anyone would information on the accident should call the Plano Police Department Traffic Unit at 972-208-8055.

" I went through this area around 8 pm and was amazed by all police and NTTA vehicles all around the scene with their Christmas lights flashing. This was an overkill! My observation was there were more people standing around bs'ing than working.

This all is talking in how much over funded these groups have become.

The only other comment I would like to make is the city of Plano and NTTA needs to be investigated for their confidential agreement they have regarding timing of the traffic signals. I wonder if mistiming of traffic signals had anything to do with it? We have the fox guarding the house here. Take the drive from 121 to Carrolton on the service road and see if you don't hit every traffic signal. Better yet, look at the skid marks at these intersections which is more telling of the problem "

" Jack,
It's called safety. You can complain about all the lights flashing and all the vehicles. Sorry when you hit an electrical pole with a truck full of gravel, I'm sure it broke and you don't just wave your magic wand and its fixed right away. They have a lot of emergency personnel blocking the area for their protection and for everyone else. When you are waiting for the electrical company, should they just let it go and risk someone else getting hurt? They also have to do an accident investigation when you have serious injuries, but I'm sure you knew that.
Get on the tollway and bypass it and not be cheap. Also, have some respect for the people that protect you and me each day in our country. You would probably complain about the armed forces too. "

" Robert - read my post again. I went through the area at 8PM - seven hours after the accident! Stop hiding stupidity under the name of public safety. "

" Not taking sides one way or another but I went by northbound on 121 Thursday at about 7:30 or so. The intersection was shut down and there were a lot of flashing lights, but not really a lot of cops that I could see, a few. There was a lot of power, phone and that type of repair folks and they looked to be pretty busy, I didn't see a lot of people standing around. The lights seemed to be out so the accident apparently caused quite a bit of damage. If your going to shut down a busy intersection at that time of the day you better have personnel their to handle it. "

" Jack - How about some facts to back up your accusations. It's real easy to fire off crack pot assumptions when you don't have any hard facts to back it up. Confidential agreements to mistime the traffic signals? Seriously?

Instead fabricating conspiracy theories, maybe you should get more involved in your local government and see how things really work. "

" Bob,

I've done my homework. I suggest you do yours. Contact the city manager and ask who is responsible for the time timing of the traffic signals on the service road, then show me where this is disclosed in the public domain.

The bottom line is we may have the fox guarding the henhouse. "

" 1. NTTA sent mutual aid to assist in the accident a lot of the people were actual residents filming the aftermath because they have no value for human life perhaps?
2. skid marks all over 121 service? I agree there are and I also will tell you I drive it daily and doing 60-65mph I have no trouble stopping? Perhaps if you were not doing 80 mph because you don't want to pay a toll but want to do the speed it would not be an issue.
3. fox protecting the hen house? I just have to enjoy reading the messages though it is depressing to see how ignorant so many people are. Suggestion would be if you do not know what your talking about, maybe you should just not speak. To add the roadway was shut down due to the fact the truck and signals had to be removed from the roadway, If you allow traffic to come through someone on there cell phone texting would end up sitting on top of a worker or on top of a signal pole. Here's something take responsibilty for your actions. We all make mistakes it's called human error, instead of trying to blame others for what we do. "

" In all seriousness from 1pm to 5:30pm it was strictly a clean up effort, it took 3 crane tow trucks a loader and a dozer just to get the truck and trailer off the corner onto a flatbed trailer with some parts as the engine was torn off the trailer axles were on one side and the cab was in a big pile of dirt, a big part of the problem was a power pole that was broken and was held up between the tractor trailer and the power cables above, so the power company had to have a crane and crews just to disconnect and carefully cut the pole away in pieces as to not allow it to fall, following this the half load of dirt that the truck was hauling ended up on top of the signal cabinet base, the power pedestal and where a new pole had to be set as a temporary signal pole. Once the signal workers from Plano could safely get into the work zone it only took them 2 and a half hours to put a new cabinet in rewire the intersection, set a new pole, and run 3 new signal heads by cable. The other delay after this was being the power pedestal was now GONE it required a new meter and new wire to be ran overhead by the power company and tied into the old transformer, all these things take time unfortunately but It still was done at an exceptional rate of speed, and we should all think NTTA, Plano, and even Frisco traffic for sending all available crews to assist with any task including traffic control because if they had not shut down those ramps and diverted the other roads you would be on here complaining about how you had to sit at a dark intersection for 3 hours while P.D. tried to clear your vehicle through the area, closing it off made it much easier for you to NOT get stuck in the work zone. "
uranidiot wrote on Apr 20, 2012 2:19 PM:
" Here is another thought, why would Plano and NTTA want to generate wrecks? Wrecks equal lawsuits, lawsuits equal cost...What would Plano or NTTA have to gain from this? Next you will try to tell us that the signal timing is set by OPEC to cause you to burn more gas right? It's all just one big conspiracy right? Get over it. "
