As the fifth anniversary of the death of Officer Wes Hardy approaches, Plano Police are set to honor those officers killed in the line of duty.
Hardy, a motorcycle officer and 12-year law enforcement veteran, was killed in a traffic accident on July 7, 2007. At the department's annual Peace Officer Memorial Service on Wednesday, Hardy, as well as all other officers killed in the line of duty in 2011 will be honored. The memorial begins at 1 p.m. and will be held at Haggard Park in downtown Plano.
Officer David Tilley of the Plano Police Department said officials from the city will be on hand, as will an honor guard and bagpipers from Plano PD. The event is open to the public and a reception will be held following the service.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page (www.odmp.org), 166 law enforcement officers were killed in the United States in 2011. There were more deaths in Texas, 13, than any other state. Two of the Texas officers killed were from the Metroplex. Dallas PD Officer Kevin Marceau was struck by a vehicle, while Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy Clifton Taylor was killed by gunfire while responding to a call near Venus, Texas.
So far in 2012, 36 officers have been killed, including two from Texas.
