The city of Allen's engineering and traffic director, John Baumgartner, has announced his retirement from the city effective July 20.

During Baumgartner's 12-year tenure with the city of Allen, he managed a multitude of projects during a period of significant growth.

"John is a rare talent in that he combines great technical expertise with an inclusive team management style to create a positive environment to solve growth issues," said City Manager Peter Vargas. "As a city, we have been tasked to accomplish projects that cities much larger than ours have shied away from. And yet, each project is more successful than the last."

While employed by the city, Baumgartner oversaw development projects related to roadways, water and sewer infrastructure including the construction of new water towers, and construction of city facilities such as the Municipal Service Center and the Allen Event Center. Other major projects included Greenville Avenue, Stacy Road, the Stacy Road pump station and storage tanks, the LEED-certified Fire Station No. 5 and the Allen Public Library.

"I have had the privilege to serve as part of a great organization with a passion to work with the council and citizens to make Allen a wonderful place to live, work, and play," Baumgartner said. "I can truly say I enjoyed coming to work every day and making a positive difference for our community. I will miss everyone, but will have fond memories of all that has happened over the last 12 years."

Baumgartner will join League City as assistant city manager of public works effective August 1. Baumgartner is a Texas Registered Professional Engineer with more than 23 years of experience in municipal government, engineering and public works operations.

"John has been a tremendous asset to the city of Allen," Vargas said. "We wish him well as he begins his next adventure."
