Metzger, Edwards headline all-district baseball teams
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
The 2012 season was one to remember for several local teams, with Sunnyvale and Rockwall Christian certainly falling into that category.
The Raiders and Warriors each followed up solid regular seasons with extended playoff runs.
Those accomplishments were recognized recently on the all-district baseball teams.
The Raiders rolled to the 13-2A championship in undefeated fashion. They carried that momentum over into the playoffs, posting series victories over Franklin, Corsicana Mildred and Gunter to advance to the regional championship game for the first time in school history.
The road came to an end with a 3-2 loss to Brock in the regional final, but the groundwork was set for future Sunnyvale teams to follow.
"They are the best group I have ever had," Sunnyvale head coach Tim Arden said. "These guys believe they can go out and play against anybody and that they can compete and the can win. They have worked hard from day one and done everything I have asked of them."
The Raiders were led by Zach Metzger, who was named 13-2A most valuable player. The senior catcher, who was also a first-team all-state selection, had a huge effect on the game, whether with his bat or with his presence behind the plate.
"He really can impact a game in a lot of ways," Arden said. "We have a lot of guys who can hit the ball, but he is one of those guys that other teams really have to think about how they want to pitch him because he can change the game with one swing."
Metzger had plenty of company among the superlative award winners.
Junior Brock Taylor was named offensive player of the year, while junior Mason Goodin was tabbed as the co-defensive player of the year.
Jake Wilcox, who earned three victories in the playoffs, was named as the pitcher of the year, while Joey Rosato was honored as the newcomer of the year.
Arden earned coach of the year honors after leading the Raiders to a 29-6 record and the run to the regional title game.
Sunnyvale also placed four players on the 13-2A first team, including Will Moss, Wesley Phillips, Connor Nash and Devin DeLeon.
Rockwall Christian won the TAPPS 2-2A district championship and followed that up with a strong playoff run.
The Warriors posted blowout victories over Watauga Harvest Christian (10-0) and The Woodlands Prep (22-0) to return to the state tournament, but the road came to an end there, as they dropped a 5-0 decision to Lake Jackson Brazosport Christian in the semifinals.
Senior John Edwards was a huge reason for the team's run, as he was undefeated on the mound all season long until the state tournament.
Rockwall Christian had three other players named to the 2-2A first team, which sets them up nicely for the future, as sophomore Colton Jones and freshmen Robert Rodriguez and Austin Dean were recognized.
Dallas Christian battled its way into the playoffs and looked to be in good shape after winning its series opener against Grapevine Faith Christian, 2-0. However, things went a different direction from there, as Grapevine Faith rallied for victories of 10-6 and 5-1 to win the series.
The Chargers had three players named to the TAPPS 2-4A first team and they will all be back, as pitcher Dalton Smith and infielders Bradley Glasscock and Alec Calvin are all juniors.
