Medical center offering healthy birth class

Published: Thursday, June 21, 2012 10:50 PM CDT
Coping and understanding the process of giving birth can be tough on mothers-to-be and their families. To help with the process Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale is offering a healthy birth class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 7. The class will take place in the Sunnyvale Medical Plaza next to the hospital.

“We talk about what happens in labor and what happens with your body,” said Chelsea Harrison, a graduate doula with Mother Me Doulas.

The class to attend the class is $100 per couple and includes reading materials. Discounts are available for Medicaid recipients. Each couple is asked to bring two to four pillows and a light blanket to the class. Lunch will be served.

“Birth is a natural thing. It is a really positive thing for parents-to-be to do something to educate themselves prior to this life changing experience. This is an opportunity to gain the education and know that they have a choice,” Harrison said. “The class helps them to be more prepared as they enter parenthood.”

Harrison said that the class allows attendees to become aware of choices that most don’t know they have during the birthing process.

“A lot of times we just do things because they have become routine. We try and educate parents and give them the information to make the choices they need to make,” Harrison said.

She added that through the classes it allows mothers-to-be and their doulas to form a bond that allows the mother-to-be to have a support system in place to make the labor process easier.

“Support is crucial for mothers-to-be. Having the support of a doula can decrease a woman asking for pain medications 50 percent during labor,” Harrison said. “C-sections become less necessary when the woman feels like someone has been through the process and understands. It’s good to know what you are saying no to. This leads to some really good conversations with your doctor.”

Harrison said most people that attend the class come away with a new perspective on the birthing process and the choices they can make.

“A lot of people have this idea that they have to give birth a certain way. This class opens them up to something they haven’t thought of before,” Harrison said.
