The life of five-year-old Ethan Allen Garrett came to a tragic end on Saturday, June 23. Garrett was swimming in a pool at the Mission Ranch Apartments when he drowned.

The Mesquite Police Department received a call at approximately 1:08 p.m. of a drowning victim at the apartments, located in the 900 block of U.S. 80. While en route, the officers were given information that CPR was in progress on the victim.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers and MFD paramedics found that a Garrett was unconscious. He was immediately transported to Dallas Regional Medical Center at Galloway. After attempts at resuscitation failed, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“This is just one of those things that happen very quickly,” said Sgt. Brian Parrish, Mesquite police public information officer. “It was Saturday at a pool during the summer so it was pretty crowded.”

Parrish said that an investigation has determined the death to be an accidental drowning and that the parents were on the scene when the incident happened.

“This happen very quickly. This was a tragic incident and there wasn’t a way to stop this,” Parrish said. “There is every indication that these are good parents. They were there and in the area when the incident took place. They had no reason to believe at the time their child was in any danger. This is a tragedy that could have happened to any one of us.”

Parrish recommends that parents make sure their children have had proper safety training regarding swimming, He suggests that if a child is not a strong swimmer the parents should enroll them in a swimming program.

“There are even some swimming programs that will teach infants how to get to the edge of the pool and not panic,” Parrish said.
